This is the 'slippery slope' argument.
I haven't thought much about the legal complications arising from polygamy. I know that there are no legal complications involved in gay marriage, so I support it outright.
The thing is that (within the boundaries of consensuality), I think we have to be realistic - the law is required to reflect reality, I think. There have been unofficially-endorsed gay monogamous unions for centuries. Recognising them is merely recognising reality. The fact is that there have been plenty of polygamous relationships too. I can't comprehend wanting to share my partner, personally, but what is to be allowed and what is not to be allowed has nothing to do with what edsawyer finds personally acceptable. If all of the people genuinely want to be involved in a polygamous relationship, I don't see where it's the government's place to stop them. I don't have any opinion about what the legal status of a polygamous marriage should be, but I actually take your point. What we think of as 'good moral behaviour' for ourselves is not what we should legally require others to do. So long as people are not being (involuntarily) hurt, it's our obligation as humans to live and let live...

There is no relation between making polygamy legal and gay marriage legal. Marriage is a contractual union between two partners. If the two partners happen to be of the same sex, it is still a marriage of TWO. One has nothing to do with the other, except that some people consider both to be sinful.

I certainly don't think gay polygamy's going to be an issue--that would show that we're living in a very different society and culture from the one we have!
I don't think hetero polygamy will be an issue, either. It would create an underclass of people who can never get married, and tends to lead to abusive relationships for women and children. It would also be very difficult to provide them insurance benefits.

people will that and other excuse to prevent same-sex marriages from happening, yet people fail to realize is that society as a whole deciedes what is acceptable behavior. In 1800's it was very common for a 14 year old girl to be married to an 18 year old, NOW that is not allowed. So I hope that same-sex marriage becomes legal..

Legalize it all. If two men can make it work, great, If a man can make it work with three women, fantastic, and if one woman can marry 5 women and they can all be happy, wonderful. I dont care. The sanctitiy of marriage has been defiled by hetrosexual couples who have brought on a 50% divorce rate, so lets let someone else try it. Im all for it.

Slippery slope arguments don't work.
It's simple. The 14th Amendment guarantees that all laws must apply to all citizens equally. Thus telling a woman she can marry a man but a man can't marry a man is unconstitutional. Equal protection under the law. Telling someone they can't marry as many people as they want is not unconstitutional because there is no protection for such a group.

That's a huge stretch to compare all of that, because then we might start letting Negoes marry White girls, then they would want to poligomize, and gay -ize, and then we would have gay, mulattos who only want to marry Irish, who of course are always drunk, so then we'd have a bunch of red-headed, mulatto, half gay, poligamists, sons' o' bieiietches, AND WHERE WOULD WE BE THEN? Some idiot might start a war? Some people might take issue with peoples race, sexual preference, ah the inhumanity!

Granting someone else a right that you yourself already enjoy (e.g. to get married to one person of their choice) has nothing to do with the prospect of giving people rights to do something quite different that you *don't* already have the right to do (e.g. to be married to several people at the same time).
The issues can only be treated separately.
