I have my first karate lesson in a couple of days. What's the best thing to do with shoulder length hair and long bangs that I normally just sweep across to the side and tuck behind one ear?

2 french braids pigtail style, it works for surfing, i bet it will work for karate

for karate it will probably be best to keep away all the hair from your face because it will distract you and constantly have you sweeping away the hair. if you simply tuck the bangs behind your ears, with the movement you do in karate it wont be enough. you should put your hair up in a high ponytail or bun and then pin up your bangs with bobbypins or a cute fashion pin to look cute :) just make sure its sturdy and will hold or else the hair will slip. good luck!

Since your hair is not long enough for ponytails, I will suggest a sweat band, it keeps the hair nice and neat, it will also protect you from perspiring. You can buy them in in many colors and some dojo carry sweat bands. Some sweat bands are elasticized and some you can tie at the back and has logo of a karate or sports wear logo.

BTW, When I took it many years ago, the first day was learning how to fall and not get hurt. Don't be expecting any sparing just yet. Have fun and stay with it.

Tie it back in a pony tail if it won't hit your eyes when you spin and stop.
If it hits your eyes put it up,and you'll have no problem.

Ponytail or french braid, you'll need it out of your way and under control.
