Only certain chicken breeds have the full capacity to fly and even the breds that can more often chose not to fly, they can if they wanted to fly about 300 feet.
Chickens prefer to use their wings when they leap from high places to they glide down.

People chicken fly just fine. They are not the most graceful bird but they fly fine and can and do roost up in trees at night unless you cage them up.
It takes two people and a pair of sicors. Hold the bird and strech out the wing. Use the siccors and cut the feathers that stick out towards the back ofthe wing.
They are long and you want to clip them off short all the way along the entinre length of the wing back to the body. Cut off about 4-6" of feather or back to where the wing gets solid. You do not have to be exact just clip both wings.
I cut mine birds when they are young and then again when they are full grown. I have heavy birds so they do not fly much and stay inside a 5 foot fence. They tend to try to fly more when they are little and before they get full grown. Once grown it is not so bad.
They may still try after being cut but it will be harder for them to actually get up in the air and they can not go far.

Birds have 2 sets of feathers. Clip the set closest to the outside of the body and do not touch any of the inner ones. When they grow back in 3-6 months, clip them again. Use a pair of scissors like you would use in the kitchen to cut chicken bones because the feathers are tough.

You clip the feathers on thier wings with strong scissors. Chickens can't fly very well at all, but they can get out of a fenced area if you don't clip the wings.

even though chickens wont really get far even if the wings arent clipped, you should do so if you are in an area where it might be nuisance. for example your chicken would scrath up the rosebushes' soil or the neignbors garden. like the others said, use a nice pair of sharp scissors. cut it just around and dont cut too much or the birds can can injured. good luck. it really no big deal.
