Its common for a large litter to take 12 hours to whelp.

The fact that the first six were quick, is good for the mom, as she didn't have to labor so long...but, give her a while longer before you worry..

This is a good time to get the others nursing...just make sure they all stay warm.

Vets here charge $280 for C-section..But I really think it is too early to worry.

Okay... Please don't panic. I know it's scary, but you'll get through it. Give her a little while to relax... She's been working hard to push out 6 puppes, and she may just be taking a little break. Sometimes, the last puppies take much longer than the first ones.

If the puppy isn't stuck in the birth canal, you're fine for now. At 3:30 or so, consider calling the vet for advice. They're good at that. Or do it now. It couldn't hurt. For now, just try to relax a bit. Take some nice, deep breaths and lightly rub her tummy for her if she seems to enjoy it. The last puppy of our last litter of 6 took an hour and ten minutes, simply because my female was tired... She had no complications.

(A C-section is quite expensive, sometimes costing around $2000, though it would probably be cheaper if there is only one puppy left. Ask the vet if you call them. They'll tell you, and they'll probably work out a payment plan if need be.)

Best wishes!

Edit: Wow! Chetco, where the heck do you go to the vet!? Haha! It'd be worth the price of gas to drive to your vet for my Bulldog...

First, the vet should give her a shot of pitocin to stimulate contractions again. If that doesn't work and he's sure there is a pup inside her (may take x-rays) she will need a c-section. Every vet charges a different amount, based on the size of the dog. And yes, it's expensive.

If you didn't research that possibilty before hand, you may be setting yourself up for more problems than you know!

A female didn't need to be bred to satisfy her emotional needs. There is an awful lot that goes into breeding dogs right - are you sure you're ready? Do you know how to build a proper whelping box with a pig-rail, so that none of the pups can be crushed behind or under their mom? Do you know what eclampsia is? If you don't, your dog could die. Do you know how to tell when all the pups have been born? If there are any left inside her, they could die and so could she. Do you know where the nearest emergency clinic is? Dogs often deliver in the middle of the night. If there are any problems with the whelping, it may cost you $100 just to walk in the clinic's door - then all the other costs on top of that.

Before you breed, you have to have your vet do a health exam and fecal tests and blood tests for intestinal worms and heartworm to be sure her health is good. Then make sure your dog and the male you select (who should be a champion - your pups will be worth more!) are tested for Brucellosis - a canine VD.

If you breed her to a top quality male from an experienced breeder, they can help you with advice and may even show up to help you deliver the pups - but usually you're on your own. They can also advise you as to whether or not your female is good enough to breed and that she has no major faults that she could pass on. Expect to pay at least the sale price of one pup for your stud fee.
If you just want a pup to keep for yourself, it's a lot easier (and cheaper) to buy one than to breed your own. The pups are going to need food and shots and worming and lots of care for eight weeks. If the mother rejects them, guess who is going to be up twice a night and four times a day hand feeding every pup? Have you got the time and energy? You won't make much money breeding dogs if you're doing it right! One of my breeder friends once calculated that she made less than $1.85 per hour after expenses in a litter with no problems. I bred one litter myself (from champion dogs!), but now I'd rather go and buy the pup I want.

If you're still reading, next time go to www.akc.org and look up breeders to get a quality dog. The best breeders will show their dogs in breed, obedience and/or field work - and they will be members of a dog club that promotes breeding health, good-tempered dogs.

We breed English Bulldogs and the fee we pay for a c-section is $450. I'm not sure about the other part of your question because we always do scheduled c-sections. I would think that you wouldn't want to wait too long. I would still call the vet and let him know what is going on. He may tell you to bring her in right away. GOOD LUCK!!!

If she is still having contractions, then hold her by her rib cage, and just past her rib cage, where they end and her soft belly begins, put pressure with both hands, gently when she has her next contraction, and sort of pushing up and back towards her back end. If there is a puppy, it should soon show itself. This happened to me, and the puppy is now at it's new home and almost 3 months old

Don't know, but call the vet NOW..tell him you don't have a ton of money to spend...and ask him over the phone if it is normal for her pup to be so high up.... If not normal, ask how much he charges, then ask someone for a loan, or go hock things at pawnshop. I am an animal lover... Have done this before..

I think it could be normal. Seems as if some of the other pups came out much later... I was so nervous I don't remember. She was having them on MY COUCH...lolz.

Best Wishes,

Barbara

If you are worried about price to take care of your dog, then you should not have had puppies. If you are concerned, call an emergency vet and talk to them about it. They may ask you to bring the whole lot in so they can monitor her, or they may simply say to wait it out.

Please, have your female fixed as soon as possible. Breeding should be left to professionals who can afford the complications and situations that arise with it.

First off, if you are worried about the vet bills you should not have allowed your dog to have puppies! Take her to the vet immediately, the puppy could die if it doesn't come out and your dog might even die.
