In the article it mentions that the Fundamentalist Christians have some of the Apocalyptic doomsday scenarios playing through there minds. Since very early times people have looked through Apocalyptic writings for hope in difficult times (Jews and Christians Old and New Testaments have examples of this type of writing) . I think this is what is behind it ultimately hope after suffering. Remember the millennium folks? Since the late 70's some Fundamentalists have been pushing certain dates and events into some time lines for the coming of the Messiah (for Christians Jesus) and an age of peace and an end to war etc. the happily everafter which happens after serious carnage. I believe they even categorize themselves as pre-trib post trib (Tribulation that time with all the wars and plagues) I have heard that Iran's leader was a madman, I guess he's a Fundamentalist Muslim. I wonder other than the terrorists blowing themselves and others up how many followers of Islam are of fundamentalist branches? Great wars and nuclear arms races happening and all these Fundamentalists running around seeing only a very small piece of a very large picture. Just for the record Some Christians, such as Roman Catholics and some Protestant denominations, believe in the Second Coming but don't try to advance it. It's important to be ready for the Second Coming, they say, though its timetable cannot be manipulated. Basically live well and treat others kindly the rest is in God's hands. I hope there are more from all sides of the picture that believe that.

I asked a similar question before. It scares the hell out of me that Christians are unwittingly bringing about a time of great horror and despair through some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy because they've so deluded themselves into thinking that End Times is near.

I suppose if one takes a strong position, one wants to have immediate confirmation that they are correct. If the time comes and goes without apparent effect - one is greatly disappointed.
