Business's have always taught there employees upselling. Whether where they work does it or not they have picked it up by shopping places etc and just do it. I work in the sales field like that and usually I just say it because there isn't much else to say. Like when I worked at Mcdonald's you never know when there done and customers don't like to tell you when there done they are like can i have a big mac. You stare at them and there waiting for you to say something then your like will that be all??? I said it other times just because there doesn't seem to be much else to say at that time. For instance customer says can i have a big mac and a fry please? It would seem short and rude to say your total is 32.41. So I would say anything else for you today? It's a way of conversing and personalizing conversation

It's either politness, or the last chance to admit to whatever goods you have stowed in your pockets. No joke....it's not shoplifting unless you leave the premises with the object in question.(at least where I live) Maybe the cashier wants to give you the last, and final chance...to realize you've stowed a pack of gum in your pocket, because your hands were full with mountain dew bottles, a bag of cheetos, and maybe a Hot Rod magazine. (Never really thought about it, but it's a magazine about cars that sounds like a magazine about gay porn.)...anyway, so the cashier doesn't ask if it's everthing, I leave the store with the pack of gum, and the SWAT shows up. I'm running through yards, getting bean bags shot at me, and dogs chasing me......
Actually, she said ....."Is that everything?" and I remember the pack of gum in my pocket, that I stowed there because my hands were full with mountain dew, a bag of cheetos, and one hot rod magazine....(a magazine about cars that sounds like a magazine about gay porn.)

Just marketing strategy. Sales clerks are always encouraged to ask this, because over the course of hundreds of transactions, it adds dozens of sales... or would, if we had not all learned to ignore the question!

in all companies employees are required to ask questions like this to try to improve on customer service and possibly to add to the sale....but customer service improvement lines to make people think they are concerned is a big thing in business today
especially in mass customer businesses
they are trying ta keep ya comin back to them by "going the extra mile"

They are checking to see if you are shop-lifting and maybe want to change your mind. Kind of like giving you a last chance to come clean.

They are just being polite. Maybe you are eyeing something that you might want to buy, or maybe you might have forgotten something and they are just making sure that what you have completes your purchase.

I suppose it's just better than assuming you have finished and just walking away. What if you had not finished, you would then think she was very rude.
