Don't worry. It's not a hereditary disease. It's caused by a reaction to the antibioties against a streptococcal infection that causes Rheumatic Fever. It's characterized by uncontrolled movements of the face and arms, contortions or jerky movements. It only lasts for a few weeks or maybe a few months with complete recovery. The real concern is the Rheumatic fever which can damage heart valves leaving permenant disability in its wake. That is why all suspected strep infections in children need to be cultured and treated with penicillin or erythromycin.
The disorder was named after St.Vitus the patron saint of dancers who is also believed to be able to intercede on behalf of those affected with various nervous disordes such as epilepsy, and St.Vitus Dance.

St.Vitus dance is also called Sydenham`s chorea. Like rheumatic fever it follows streptococcal sore throat in children. It can result in carditis. Per se it is self limiting.
