I don´t think being called black is offensive, but then again, i am not the spokesperson for black people. and it is wrong to call a dominican african-american because they´re not. they´re hispanic or latinos or DOMINICAN. i don´t know what this obsession with race and placing people in a box is here in this part of the world. and, also, i am black and not african american, that is also an an option. that is, i am of african origin, living in the states, but not american. it´s hard to place people in a box, so try not to do it. and NEVER call an asian person oriental. Oriental is a thing (carpet, furniture...) Aisan is a person.

I only detest either term when speaking to a white person and they find the need to refer to you or some other person by a color other than as a person. I am a person first, female second, and lastly an american citizen, born and raised in the USA with no fewer than 20 generations before me born and raised in the USA. Can we just be Americans? Period and furthur more Africa is a Continent, what country could you attach to American?

It honestly depends. One of my friends would get a little upset at being called "African-American" because she wasn't technically African. She was from the Dominican. I vividly remember her telling someone "You can say I'm black, brown, or Dominican." It really depends on the person and their ethnic heritage.

That is a tough one.
I have been corrected regardless which one I use. It seems to be a personal preference on their part.

My daughter says oriental is for food and Asian is for the people.

Just don't say You People. It has a bad ring to it and it sounds prejudice regardless of how you meant to say it. In fact putting You before any religion Nationality or any group sounds prejudice.

God Bless you, ;-)

I think that if you where born in America or became an american citzen..you are Amercian. Plain and simple. My dad came from Germany. I dont call myself a german-american. That is one thing that is great about this country. That is there are people of all kinds of backgrounds and skin colors.

Well, I'm a "caucasion" married to a "black" man and we have a bi-racial daughter. I asked her how she feels about it. She says she hates both terms--black and African American...."Because I'm mixed...I'm white and I'm black...and I'm an American." As for myself, I think the word "caucasion" sounds too much like a dirty word..... BM
