I'm 5'11 and I sleep in a twin bed with a couple inches to spare. Width matters more. I am thin, so it is comfortable, I would imagine that if you are bulkier than a full would be the best!

you have many good answers. let me summarize what i know from personal experience. first of all i am also 5'8, a plus size woman, sleep alone (most of the time), and have lived in 1 apt, 7 houses and 1 condo over last 20 years. and i am a restless sleeper.
I have a king bed because my husband and I bought an expensive wood bedroom set and i can't justify getting rid of it, but when this mattress wears out I can. I hate it. it is just too big, hard to make, hard to flip the mattress, and sheets, etc. are more expensive. And after trying to fit it into all those different master bedrooms (last 4 houses) I would never buy a king again.
A queen bed is better. You get 5" more in length than a full. Easier to move, more likely to fit a standard size bedroom and still have room for dressers and side tables. Two big people can still sleep comfortably in it.
If you have limited space, or limited budget right now or are not a restless sleeper there is a great Twin bed that I picked out for my niece last week. (even my mom sleeps on a twin, because my dad snores, and her 2nd bedroom is small). We found a twin daybed at ikea that has storage drawers, And pulls out (with full drawers) to become a king if you throw a 2nd twin mattress on the other side. (we got an air mattress for the pull-out side.) oops just checked web-site and that bed isn't there today, hmm i'd check back later, if you were interested.

A twin or full will only be 5 inches shorter than a queen or king at about 75". If for no other reason, go for a full or queen to get a little more toss and turn room. You can always buy an extra long on a twin or a full, but you will pay dearly for that extra length. I would suggest a full size. The price difference can be noticeable from a twin to a full, but often full size is the same price as queen! And remember more coils is not always better. Thicker gage wire means less coils, but more strength!
Twin Mattress Size 39" wide x 75" long
Full Mattress Size 54" wide x 75" long
Queen Mattress Size 60" wide x 80" long
King Mattress Size 76" wide x 80" long

Twin beds are long enough for you if you're under about 6'. But they get kind of small after a while - I just upgraded to a full myself because even sharing with a cat is enough to make a twin bed feel crowded.

It all depends on how much space you like to have around you, and if you are going to be sleeping with someone.
I suggest you go to a mattress store and try laying around on a couple different sized beds to see what you think you'll like. Or if you're going to order online or something then look up the dimensions of the different sizes and get something to measure it out with on your floor and see if there's enough space for you to be comfortable.
I'm 6" and I sleep in a twin, my feet tend to hang off the edge a bit but a big enough blanket makes that no matter.
Hope this helps.

I would go for a full-size bed. Its a little bit bigger then a twin, and that way you have room to move around.

You should probably go for a full size bed or a queen size if you have the room. Bigger beds are always more comfortable than smaller ones.
