All your comments make me laugh. I am a mormon and I live in Utah of all places. It is funny how other people in other states or countries view Utah and a couple of surrounding states that praticing polygamy. Yes Utah was the frist reconginze state of praticing polygamy, but I can honestly tell you they are everywhere, all over the USA and other countries. I know Jeff Warrens is on the FBI top ten list for polygamy related crimes. He also owes land in North or South Dakota (I can't remember) and Arizona as well as Canada. Actually there are huge polygamist colonies in Canada due to the laws not as strict there. Utah is basically the only state that prosecuts polygamy and so polygamy is reflected as a problem in utah. But I can tell you what! There are many groups in other states.
They brainwash their kids. They are not allowed to leave their compound. Most wives are on welfare even though their husband is a multi millionaire. The children and wives are scared to leave they have absolutely no clue how the "outside" world works. Most if not all children are below the schools testing average and most are home schooled. They go through child abuse and negliect. Some polygamist group their prophet chooses who to marry and other it is the father or an up standing citizen of their church who carries a high ranking position.
Polygamy first started by the LDS because of women and children whos husband or father went to war or crossed the plains and died. Also women couldn't just hold a job down at that time. If they didnt have someone to help them out finacally they were doomed if not married to a man who could support them.
Today the LDS church doesn't practice it because it is not needed. Also it is governed in the church to be a good mormon that you MUST OBEY THE LAWS OF THE LAND. Polygamy is illegal and therefore any mormon from the LDS church who practices it will be excommunicated.

There are many small and different breakoffs from the LDS Church that practice polygamy. The largest sect, FLDS that is centered on the UT/AZ border, believes a bit in the doctorine that the LDS church does, but it has mostly been totally changed around. The LDS religion used to practice polygamy back in the 1800's, but the reasoning behind that was that many women lost thier husbands on the way across the plains to Utah. Polygamy basically gave these women and their families someone who could provide for their well-being. The FLDS have changed from this original reason. They have brainwashed their women and children. All of the women have to wear long sleeved dresses and have all of their hair pulled back. they are very silent and secretive. They arrange marriages of young girls to old men, many being a fairly close relation such as thier uncle. It is much different than true LDS doctorine.

Yes they are all over Utah esp. the AZ/Ut border. You can drive by and see it. Different groups and they teach its gods will that they are polygamists, and they force their young girls into marriage with old yucky men. There are bands of young men who have joined together from being kicked out of these societies to keep the young girls for the old men. Im sure this is not in every case but in some anyways. The LDS of today officially does not recognize polygamy anymore even though it was a main part of the early doctrine. It had a purpose when there was a shortage of people but now its out moded.

Actually, to correct a misnomer I've seen a few times in the responses to this question...
The "Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" does NOT practice polygamy. The RLDS church was founded after Joseph Smith's murder, when Emma Smith (his wife) and other former LDS members believed that the next prophet should be Joseph Smith's son, and that all further prophets should be directly related to Joseph. They have since changed their name to the Community of Christ and are headquartered in Independence, Missouri. They own the first temple built by the LDS people, which is located in Kirkland, Ohio.
I grew up in Utah, and have seen first-hand several of the polygamist communities that reside manily in central and southern Utah. They have many different names, but the couple that I remember are "The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," and "The True and Living Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

There are no groups of Mormons that are practicing polygamy. If they were practicing it, they would be excommunicated from the Church.
Polygomy within the Church was discontinued many decades ago, and members were told they could no longer practice, in accordance with Federal law.
The groups that you hear about that practice polygamy are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons).
Many have started their own religion that they call the Re-organized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!
It is ignorance that leads people to say all Mormons are polygamists.

All LDS are Morman, not all Morman are LDS. Morman = believes in Book of Morman. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints stopped practicing polygamy in the late 1800's due to revelation given to the prophet, Wilford Woodruff. Some people didn't believe in that revelation and either quit the church or were excommunicated. Their societies still exist, especially along the UT/AZ border.

Colorado City in Arizona is one, under scrutiny right now. Theres another one in Utah. Those are two big ones. And the doctrine they use is the old LDS one, BEFORE polygamy was dropped. Do a search for Colorado City, Ariona, it will tell you alot.

No, if you practice polygamy, you would be excommunicated from the church. The group that practices polygamy is called the fundamentalist church. They aren't even based in Utah, they live on the border between Colorado and Arizona.

YEAH THERE ARE SOME JACK MORMON GROUPS PRACTICING POLYGAMY. IT IS ILLEGAL THOUGH. THE MORMONS OF UTAH WERE SUPPOSED TO GOVE UP POLUGAMY WHEN UTAH BECAME A STATE, IN FACT IT WAS A CONDITION OF STATEHOOD THAT THEY NO LONGER PRACTICE POLYGAMY. BUT IF A MAN COULD AFFORD OR SHOULD WE SAY COULD STAND TWO WIVES, THEN WHY NOT?
