Rain is a form of precipitation, other forms of which include snow, sleet, hail, and dew. Rain forms when separate drops of water fall to the Earth's surface from clouds. Not all rain reaches the surface, however; some evaporates while falling through dry air. When none of it reaches the ground, it is called virga, a phenomenon often seen in hot, dry desert regions.

A simple explanation would be to think of a cloud (A sponge) and when it become saturated(full) with water from the atmosphere, it will release all the water which in turn gives you the rain.

Water from lakes, oceans, and rivers sucks up into the air and forms into clouds. When the clouds get too full of water, the water falls onto the ground, causing rain. It's all called the water cycle.

The sky sucks up the sea like a sponge when it is a sunny day, then when the sun goes in and the sky can't suck up any more water, the wind blows the clouds over the land and it rains because the sun isn't shining.

water in puddles , rivers , oceans evaporates into the air and is absorbed by the clouds and when the cloud gets full it rains. The full cloud part can be demonstrated by using a bucket of water and a sponge. The evaporation part can be demonstrated by using a teapot to show how the water turns into steam... use a plate to let the steam hit it and turn back into water.

When Sun shines on the Earth, some of water goes up and forms clouds. Then wind blows the clouds and some of heat from the Earth, makes it rain.

As moist air rises, or is forced to rise, it will condense when it cools enough and produce clouds. If these clouds have supercooled water in them, ie the temperature of the top of the cloud is below freezing point, these supercooled water drops collide turn to ice, accumulate more water/ice and eventually fall as rain.

Complicated when you start with the sun, so explain that all clouds have water in them and when they get too heavy, the water starts to fall out, just like a shower.

The sun heats up the sea like water in a kettle......
the steam comes out of the big invisible kettle and makes a big fluffy warm cloud........
the cloud flies to see all its cloudy mates....
but its very chilly where the clouds friends live......
so the wee cloud starts to shiver!!!!
and shakes out all the rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
