Recently got into photographty with a decent canon slr set up.I can find plenty of landscape and buildings to practice on, but I would like some different human beings to practice with. I would find it difficult to go up to someone in the street and say "excuse me can I take your picture". Any ideas much appreciated.

join your local photography club or local night school.

they will have arranged shoots where they book the models and you all go along and have 15 minutes of shooting each. they will also help you learn about studio lighting.

it's harder working with models than it looks. you have to be able to communicate you requirements quickly and clearly. a good model already knows what looks good, whereas someone off the street will be hard work for a newbie.

for now just ask someone in your family. it doesn't matter who really. just use the practise to get used to body shape, poses and orientation.

I am currently designing site for some aspiring models (for free), and I would be willing to pass your information on as i am sure they would like some well taken photos for the site pm with your details and where you live, and i will pass them on and let them decide if they want you to take some photos, ps, if you need a porfolio site you can always pm and it will be glad to help for free.

Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

Good question I myself have just bought a new SLR camera and want the same thing so I have thought about advertising my skills in the local paper for weddings etc but make sure that they know you are an amateur and that you are doing it to improve your skill, I am trying to reach people who otherwise would not have a photographer through lack of money, then just charge them your outgoing costs.
Hope this helps
Andrew

I know exactly how you feel. I just recently took a photography class and it required a series of different shots to be taken and turned in. I started just taking photos of friends in different environments like the mall, beach, woods, etc. After awhile i got bored just shooting my friends so i decided to take it to the streets. If i saw a person doing something that i knew would look great in a frame or in my photo book i would just calmly tell them that i was a photographer experimenting with different types of shots and angles and wondered if they would mind me photographing. But if you know that you are going to be putting the shots into a book or selling the image, then u MUST get permission from the person you are photographing.

Some people are very flattered by that particular approach (and some not so much, lol). The way they do it at my college is they advertise in the paper that they are looking for models to photograph, and just so they know you're not up to any funny business, you can put, "May bring escort."

You're doing the right thing by finding a way to ask people to take their picture. Taking it while they are unaware is a tad creepy. Lol.

The most artistic photos surely don't have people saying "cheese" in them.
Isn't it better from that point of view to take pics "au naturel" and therefore you don't (by and large) need to ask until after the shoot and then only if you are worried about them suing you.

Start with friends and then build a portfolio that you could show to strangers before asking them politely if they would be interested in posing for you.

Tell them you are a Talent Scout for a major modeling agency, and you would like to give them an audition.

it may give wrong impression, at least about the age. but if feel when you select an avatar for yourself of your liking some thing of your nature reflects in your liking and hence the selection. so i guess that the avatar gives right impression at least to some degrees.

Be HONEST on what you plan on doing with the images and even offer to give them a photoCD of the images for themselves to use.
