I turned 18 in 1969. Registered for the draft. Was old enough to drink in NYC.... at long last.
All through the 50's and 60's and into the 70's guys had the draft hanging over their heads.
ELVIS GOT DRAFTED!
And...at the time ....I never really thought much more about it other than ....
"Should I just enlist in another, less lethal branch of the military? Before the army gets their meat hooks on me "
For decades they were drafting men.
Bail to where?
Ain't the sixties anymore.
Don't think Canada would be keen on thousands of draft dodgers taking refuge there.
Mexico?
Iraq's a better deal.
Some people went to College......
take enough credits to get student deferment.
Dick Cheney got some of those.
Some guys got married. Had kids.
That'll keep you out of the Army until **** really hits the fan.
Others were rejected by the military.
And others worked on bony fide CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR STATUS. Before they got drafted. Not AFTER they have been in Army for 18 months.
Some just waited for it to happen.
Draft would be a hard sell these days.

You people and your excuses about Bush's daughters. Hell anyone that uses a lame *** excuse like that ain't nothin but a coward..that...or you think your too damned good to be inconvenienced by a war. Well how's this for news...nobody gives a damn because those guys over there are too damned good for your company. So slink on off over the border with your tail tucked between your legs....only don't come back. I am so fed up by the way some of you talk about this war and our troops and our president....our country, when you have great young Americans fighting and dying for this country, and you don't have the decency to even feel ashamed. At least when you run away have enough respect to be in awe of their courage....you know, that thing you lack.
To all of you who are serving now, or have served..I apologize for my rant. Thank You and God bless you.

Hell man, why wait for the draft? Im signing up for the baddest of badasses when I turn 18. The United States Marine Corps will have my name and my ***, and Ill hand them over willingly! Not only because I desire to do everything I can to defend my country, I want revenge on those bastards! Think they can chop off an Americans head with a rusty knife and get away with it, they got another thing comming and dont any of you scummy liberal swingin ***** dare to tell me Im a bad person either, war crimes my ***. What the hell are they doing to our guys huh? Is that "legal"? You cant put laws to war because thats what war is, chaos. Its supposed to be hell. You cant put rules on how to kill people. So that said, why dont some of you armchair generals that know soooo much about fighting a politically correct war, go grab an M-16 and pop off a few rounds at a terrorist or two because everyone knows how easy it is to remember the rules when every day you have to watch some cowardly terrorist bastard kill one of your friends and pray to God that youre not next.

Right on Runnin. I find it hilarious to see the excuse of some of these posters here. Bush's daughters this AWOL that. Read the facts people. K is an idiot!!! Bush's AWOL story came from a reporter who had forged documents that didn't have the correct font during the alleged offense. News flash to the liberals.... Dan Rather lied to politically hurt Bush. Very ethical for a media icon don't you think? It was priceless to see the liberal scatter and distance themselves after they tried to use it as a talking point. HAHAHAHA!!!! God bless America and the Troops that fight to keep us safe.

Are you kidding? It's a federal crime for which you should & do get serious prison time. You can never return to the US, ever. What Carter did on this subject is disgraceful betrayal for which he should have been impeached. I would hope they'd track them down to the ends of the earth & punish them more harshly than anything military service ever could have done. If you aren't willing to serve when your country calls you don't deserve the rights we defend for you. You do deserve to live in an oppressive evil country that uses you as slaves. Might I suggest China.

with this current govnt and cabinet- yes. FFS, they didn't provide the soldiers that ARENT drafted with the necessary equiptment to protect their lives. I'm not dumb enough to be sent off to a war where I have more chance of protecting myself w the people from my hood than I do from the US Government! I would love to see all the politicians kids and the cons go off to war and die so that we can finally make changes from their deaths. Once I know and see that our govnt is protecting our soldiers and giving arms to do the job- then I'll go to war. Otherwise you idiots can die off and pave the way for the intelligent ones.

It depends if the USA declares war by the legal manner which is by the legislative branch of the Government. If the war is to defend the USA, and if the Bush daughters as well as every other politician's flesh & blood are going to go to the front line and risk their lives with me.

No, but then again I'm a chick. I can't imagine moving to Canada to avoid going to war, but I guess if it came down to it and I got drafted it might cross my mind.
