If it is a "wind resistance" bike you will mostly burn calories and add a little bit of muscle, mostly just harden yout existing muscles by keeping blood flow in them.
If you have a "magnetic resistance" bike you can adjust the tension from "hard to easy" and burn calories and build muscle. You can increase the tension so far that you can only get 10-15 pedals out, (that will build muscle) Or decrease it to burn calories.
If your bike is new (and wind resistance) return it or keep it (depending on your financial situation) and get a "magnetic" one.
Wall Mart has one for less than $100. Good luck.
