To answer your question, yes toads can be poisoneous.. but the possibility of him actually dying from just grabbing ahold of a toad or frog is very unlikely. Yes, as another person pointed out they have glands and they secrete a posion. But most toads that you find are not big enough to secrete enough to even come close to killing your dog. While it is not "good" for your dog to bite at a frog or toad... It will not Kill him. The most he will do is go around shaking his head and foaming at the mouth. As scary as it will look, I assure you it is harmless. Ask any Veterinary in your home town; they will tell you that. (as cruel as it sounds, it is quite funny to see a dog that has bitten into one, and the frog/toad secreted some of its 'poison'; because as bad as they want to "get" the trespasser on thier lawn.... they do not want to taste that nasty taste in their mouths again)

Your dog can get very sick from this. I just googled this myself last week.
Toads have enlarged glands (called the paratoid glands) on the side of the neck, one behind each eye. These glands secrete a viscous white poison that gets smeared in the mouth of any would-be predator, inflaming the mouth and throat and causing nausea, irregular heart beat, and, in extreme cases, death. Toads pose a danger to pets, which may pounce on and bite them. Humans should take care to wash their hands after handling a toad, and to avoid touching the mouth or eyes until having done so.

Maybe your dog is just curious about what the toad is. He spits it out, that means he figures out that it isn't edible. Dogs just wonder. But your dog CAN get sick because of this habit. Depending on the kind of toad. But eeww.

Records show that some people who ate toads by mistaken it as a frog had got serious sick. It would be danger for your dog if you allow it to eat toads.

My dog does the same thing, but with bugs. He just feels like he has to kill it or something. Like he has to dominate something since he's so small and my cat kicks his butt. I don't think that can hurt him.
