There's a way to get cheap-last minute tickets.
Some airlines connect their flights, for example, American Airlines connects its Chicago-Mexico Flight with AeroMexico's Mexico-London flight, so you'll be traveling in a Connection Flight, wich is cheaper than a Non-stop flight

Last minute purchases are not cheap. You will pay a full fare no matter where you purchase it from. Last minute or walk up fares is where airlines make their money. International especially will be VERY expensive.
