i am allergic to metal. it is a MAJOR drawback in my life. i can't wear jewelry unless it is plastic, no jeans with buttons, can't wash dishes at a stainless steel sink, can't sit on furniture that has any metal showing that my skin might touch. etc etc etc. Does anyone else have this? Does anyone know of a cure? Any suggestions on how to live easier?
my BF just bought me a gorgeous necklace. i love it..but the heart is metal. i have tried covering it with clear nail polish but didn't work. i WANT to wear this, any ideas how?
Any suggestions/ knowledge/ experiences/ advice on how to deal with being allergic to metal in general and/or what to do so i can wear the necklace will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

well there is no cures to allergys that i know of but what would be a good idea is to find out specifically what types of metal you are allergic to lots of metals are alloyed with other types of metals you could go i dont know touch pure metals to see if they give you a reaction then remember which ones were worse or not at all there is lots of metals that claim to be hypoallergenic like titanium platinum some palladiums and rhodiums you could try to plate the neclace in rhodium most jewelery stores that have a shop will have this substance and although temporary it will last a lot longer than nail polish (an idea about jeans) im also very sensitive to the metal used in jeans i tried this and it works great for me i have sewn a small patch over the button on the back so i still have to touch it to get it undone but it wont touch my body while im wearing it that might help give you more options in clothes shopping also maybe keep a small cloth arround with you about the size of a hand towel maybe the lint free clothes they use at jewelery stores still big but not thick then if you have to touch something metal you can use the cloth as a go between or you could start wearing cool armwarmers-gloves wear rubber gloves when washing dishes better for your hands anyways also if you are that severly allergic to metals maybe keep a blanket or a large jacket in your car to lay over metal seats or other metal stuff i hope this helps you a little bit

I too have a metal allergy- however not as severe as what you have described. Are you allergic to gold and/or platinum? I am not allergic to those- or stainless steel, thank goodness. Perhaps you could consult an allergist. Otherwise, there really isn't much you can do. The clear nail polish thing doesn't really work ( as you discovered ) . It stinks, but that's life I guess! My husband has severe eczema and is pretty much uncomfortable all the time- so just be thankful- there are worse plights in this life.

For the jewelry, carefully cut out a piece of tape in the shape of the pendent and stick it on the back.

http://nickelfreelife.com has some good answers on how to live every day. I m in the same boat as you. I use plastic silverware, wear gloves a lot, and either put a cloth with a rubber band around all the metal or put tape on everything I can the house. Instead of gloves, I started wearing a little apron. Every time I approach something metal, like a doorknob, I pick up the apron and use it as a barrier for my hands. It s way more comfortable than gloves all day. When I go out, I use the bottom of my jacket or shirt to open doors.

hmmm... I thought it was impossible to actually be Allergic to non-amino-acid things.. oh well.. it is a chemical sensitivity or something...

You should see your doctor.. I think there is medication you can take for allergies... but if it is a chemical sensitivity thing.. there probably is not... the nail polish should have worked.. unless you used metal polish?

Convert the heart into a brooch. That way, you pin it on your clothes and it won't touch your skin.
