This is probably a question for someone from Ireland. I once heard an Irish song that was hilarious, but I can only remember a few lyrics. They are: " It's a long road, but the wrong road" Also if you knew who sang it.

On the One Road
Several Singers including The Wolftones sang this song, the author is unknown,

While the lyrics might seem hilarious to one who does not know the meaning behind them, the song itself is not intended as humourous. It is a marching song of The United Irishmen, a society of Catholics, Protestants and Dissenters formed in 1791 to advance the twin aims of parliamentary reform and Catholic Emancipation. One of the founding members was Theobald Wolf Tone a wealthy Protestant, the Irish folk group The Wolf Tones took their name from him.

Ireland was under the rule of England and were not allowed free trade. Catholics (the majority in the country) were not allowed own land, run schools, own a horse worth more than £5, to vote or hold office in parliament. England tried to curry favour and appease the Irish by granting some concessions because it was at war with France. But the French Revolution encouraged the Irish to think about their own freedom.

In 1795 a secret Protestant group, the Orange Society, was formed to resist Irish nationalism.

By 1798 the Irish were ready for revolt, but waiting on assistance of promised help of troops from the France. A storm at sea prevented them from landing at the south coast of Ireland. The Irish went ahead with an armed rebellion which caused the British a lot of damage. When Wolf Tone finaly landed on the northern coast with 3000 troups, the British had rounded up most of the leaders and squashed revolt. Wolf Tone was captured, but cut his own throat to cheat the gallows. The British tightened the union of Ireland with Britain as a result.

"Chorus
We're on the one road sharing the one load
we're on the road to God knows where
We're on the one raod
Maybe the wrong road
But we're together now who cares
North Men, South Men comrades all
Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Donegal
We're one the one road singin along
Singin' a Soldier's Song"
