check your local classifieds, ask family/friends if they know anybody w/ basset hounds. however, it's very doubtful you'll be able to get a puppy absolutely free as most people charge a fee, especially for purebred pups. try the local shelter, you'll have to pay, but at least you'll be saving a dog's life

That may be a problem. There is no such thing as a free puppy. You have to get vaccinations and boosters. You have to get him neutered. I also recommend a microchip. He will need heartworm and flea prevention. This is all very costly.
It is much better to go to a Basset Hound rescue group. A vet will have the number for one in your area. You will be saving a life and get sometimes get the things I mentioned above for free or at a discount. It is a much better value for your money, and they will have puppies at this time of the year.

Have you tried the Bassett Hound rescues in your area, chances are you would not find puppies, but definetely there are some good old Bassett's looking for homes through the rescues. Breeders of registered Bassett Hounds generally do not "give away" their pups, they are a highly valued breed. By "giving" away pups, it opens up a whole ugly door to those who attempt to make these hybrid breeds, like "Co-ck-a-poos", Shih-poos, etc..these people are out for the almightly dollar, and not one iota concerned with the best interest of the animal. Good luck in your quest, but I am certain your search will not end with a "free" puppy. As well, Bassett Hounds are bred as hunting/scent dogs, if you do not have a huge, fenced in yard, your pooch won't spend too much time at home, he will catch a scent and then vamoose trying to find whatever it was he caught scent of, they don't like to be tied up all day either, and Bassett's are not the cleanest dogs you will ever find, they tend to be quite "drooly". Mind you some people see those long floppy ears, short stubby legs and those "hush puppy eyes" and think that's the way they're gonna stay, rest assured you're in for a rather large animal in the end, who likes to walk and have regular exercise, they are also prone to ear infections, so be prepared to have your animal veterinary checked frequently and regularly.

Good luck w/that. If you're wanting pure bred and free, it'd probably be through a foster program. These programs usually fix them as well, or require that the adopter does.. *in case you're wanting to breed*.
...I just remembered my moms friend in PA has one that she can't keep. He's full bred etc, if you live around the state I could pull some strings.

check your local paper. I'd also check with local vets see if anyone knows of anyone who's had pups and just wants to find them homes asap. Good luck in your search.

The cost of the dog is the least of your problems. If you can't afford one... you probably shouldn't get one because vet bills and food will break you.
