Not only will the toxins carry through to the milk but the baby will be breathing second hand smoke. It has been determined that no level of second hand smoke is safe.
The only option is to quit smoking.
The baby is at risk for diseases and cancer and the mother may well die of lung cancer before the child is 18. It is totally irresponsible. The mother should go to jail. If the father smokes in the home or car, he should also be arrested for endangering the child's health. Put the child up for adoption to someone who will truly care for the child's health.

if the mother smokes while pregnant that is being selfish toward the child. The child can be born pre mature or even full term can be a very small baby my daughter is adopted and her birth mom smoked she was born at 5 lbs. and later devolped astma. that is not fair to the child. When they get older and want to run and play with friends or be in track or any sport and cannot think about their future and don't be selfish quit for 9 months at least for the child. My soon to be sister in law smoked with first child end up miscarriage then she got pregnant again had low birth weight and now pregnant again and still smokes has more heartburn and upset stomach more. So u want to bring a healthy baby into this world where it is gonna have enough to deal with don't smoke while pregnant.

Well, let others judge, but here goes. With my first son, I smoked during my pregnancy-the more I tried to quit, the more I smoked so I quit trying to quit and cut down. When he was born, I had birth issues because he was almost nine pounds, breech and they let me have him naturally so he had to go on the bottle immediately. He suffered nicotine withdrawal. I didnt know that would happen..Fifteen years later, with my second son, I also smoked moderately when I was pregnant. I got to breastfeed him for five weeks, no smoking around him or in the house, I weaned him slowly and he had no nicotine withdrawals. Im not saying, smoke, its okay, just saying that this is what happened to me. By the way, my first son is now seventeen and six foot six and two hundred forty pounds. Im not so sure they know the real effects of smoking and pregnancy or nursing. First son was nine pounds and second was seven and a half.

Does it really matter? If the mother smokes, the baby will be inhaling smoke into his/her lungs anyway. The baby will be affected regardless of whether or not it passes into her milk?

Yes, the smoke is in your pores and the baby has no choice but to inhale it. Also, you risk giving the child asthma and all the benefits of breast feeding no longer matter.

Anything that you put into your body will get to that baby. If large amounts are consumed a day (a pack a day) it can have detrimental affects on the baby. Some mild affects are rapid heart rate, increased risk of SIDS, decrease in appetite, & restlessness to name a few. I would consider kickin the habit or at least cutting back to as few as possible.

well if you feel you NEED to smoke i think if you wait an hour after you do smoke you will be ok. but honestly I think you need to choose smoking or formula.. If it was me I'd quit smoking till you were done nursing, the baby comes first and you want to make sure your milk is the best thing for the baby. And please dont smoke around the baby:(

If she is smoking in the same room the baby is inhaling the second hand smoke and is doing damage to the babies lungs. I can't believe someone would actually do that.......truly no regard for the child's health at all. Gross....just gross......
