O.K. My balcony is about 3 feet high, but 1 storie above ground level. Walls all around apart from front.

I.E. is it likely to jump after a bird or whatever?

It might, if you are worried about it getting lost, Tie her to the door so she cannot jump over the rail. At three feet, your cat should be able to jump in or out as she pleases, just hang a shelf on the outside of your balcony to help her out.

Yes. Cat's love that kind of vantage point. It won't fall off the balcony, including the ledge, unless it is unexpectedly slippery and the cat slips while at the edge. (To be extra safe, don't give your cat access to a rained-on balcony. Also, keep flower pots
and such away from any edges. A bird might tempt a cat to sneek over some movable object, giving the cat something to stumble over when the bird flies off. That does happen a lot with cats stalking birds.)

But even if the cat were to fall off, it wouldn't likely be hurt from a one-story fall. All cats always land on their feet, and their specialized anatomy gives them great shock-absorbing ability.

Your cat should be fine whether its 3 feet or inches. Cats are highly cautious and they definitely can judge whether they can make the jump or not. Your cat is not going to slip frequently off of the edge, it will make a decision whether it wants to jump or not. Their senses are very alert to their position and surroundings, so the cat will be alert to the height difference. However, where is this balcony? Is it in your backyard? If it is right on the street, maybe this is not such a good idea for indoor cats. The cat can be oblivious to man made street hazards. If it is an already indoor/outdoor cat, then it is fine, it will have learned the dangers of outside.

How high from the ground are you?? If more than one floor up, do NOT let your cat out. Cats do NOT survive "any" fall, and a fall from 20 feet will break bones and jaws and cause internal injury. Cats are naturally curious, and yours will want to walk on the balcony rail, or wall, so keep it in if you dont want a badly hurt, or even dead, cat.

I have two cats and my younger one is definately more of a jumper. He can leap to the top of our refrigerator with no problems and jumps back down like he's stepping off a curb. We also have a floor to ceiling, multi-level scratching post and the top level is about 9 feet off the ground. It totally freaked me out the first time he hucked himself off the top but he was fine. He does this everyday. My other cat would never dream of jumping from such a height. I think cats are a better judge of their abilities than people give them credit for.

If you are planning on getting a kitten I wouldn't let it alone on your balcony until it is bigger and stronger. After it learns his/her ability levels I'd say your cat would be fine on your balcony.

Cats can jump about 6 feet straight up, I would recomend you get some screening from a hardware store and enclose the whole balcony. Better to be safe than sorry.

A 3 inch balcony? 3" is three inches. 3' is three feet.
No should not let your cat out on your balcony, I have no idea how high up you are, but even if it's only 2nd floor, it could be a disaster.

Is that 3 inches or 3 feet. Either way it will be fine. Cats land on their feet all the time and don't get hurt. My cat jumps off my greenhouse and that is at least 6 feet high so it won't get hurt

3 feet is nothing to a cat. You are fine in letting it out on your balcony.

no matter how high the balcony is...it won't harm the cat. i have had cats when i lived in apartment on the 4th floor. the even loved to walk on the edges of the balcony! don't worry about cats' safety when they are at high places...they're good at balancing their body.
