as a muslim i tell u that the biggest sin is associatin' partners with the one true god (call him by any name but the name should b beautiful and should not conjure up a mental picture)
its when man begins 2 feel and believe the existence of one true god who has all the powers and is almighty, benevolent and oft-returning, that he gets 2 live his life in a meaningful way. he begins 2 treat all other creatures of god with luv and compassion and stops being conceited and greedy. a sense of unity, peacefulness and brotherhood takes hold of him and he rises above the normal to a super human level.
if man believes in god(s) more than one then he shall choose 2 live in neglect and also invite god's wrath.

it's also a fact that almost all the major religions of the world speak of one true all-powerful god

There is no hierarchy of sin in Christianity since the coming of Jesus. Of course the natural consequences differ, but that's the same with any infraction. For spiritual purposes, a "white lie" or momentary lustful thought are the same as murder. It's only the natural consequences that vary in severity of damage to others and the offender themselves.

Traditionally, I believe the worst sin is considered to be despair. But I might be getting that mixed up with something else.

Even as an atheist I know this one: All sins are equal in the eyes of god. At least, that's what they say.
