It's supposed to be a deterrant to those who want to try it. Even if they don't succeed, they will likely be sent for psychiatric counselling rather than jail.

The only legality that I know of is when insurance is involved or when someone aids a person in suicide. The person who helps would go to jail. The suicide victim will be in hell if he isn't Christain and that is worse than jail! He will not be able to ask forgiveness for the sin of killing himself either.

I think the issue is not legality, but morality. People should try to get help before it comes to suicide. It is technically illegal, but I think it's an attempt to make a statement about the morality of the issue.

Nobody goes to jail. The criminal gets the death penalty.

It's really stupid that it's illegal. But I think the law actually does prevent some people from killing themselves. Still, real stupid, shouldn't be a law, vote libertarian.

I don't think it's illegal anymore, on the grounds of its own silliness.

While perhaps the government sought to deter life insurance fraud by making suicide illegal (and thus exempting insurance companies from covering it), I don't think that's how the law was used in practice (don't quote me on any of this, it is all creative speculation).

You get arrested if you try to commit suicide and survive. This gives the State a legal excuse to lock you in a mental ward (for the criminally insane) against your will.

Either that, or they send the Ghostbusters after you ;-)

The key word is "KILL", to kill anything is to decisively end the life of something or someone upon your active command. ok, not always, accidents do happen, but it's all about INTENT. It is illegal to "KILL". Just because it's yourself doesn't mean it's not a life, if you INTEND to end it then you are a murderer.
