I am looking for someone else that has tourettes that can tell me how they deal with accidental ticks at a work place that causes problems. I mean even though there is equal opportunity employers is my job really safe. Can they fire me because I accidently throw something or swear at someone.

I have tourettes too. you can contact me through this site if you want to talk about it ever. im 21 years old and have had it since i was 4. i was just actually diagnosed with it a few days ago, but i knew i had it. i dont swear or throw things, but i do tic sometimes. i used to be embarassed about it, but now im not. who cares if i look funny when i tic? its not something i can help and none of my friends at work say anything about it. my husband is good about it too and it doesnt bother him. educate people about tourettes and that will help them better understand what your going through. do you take any meds for it? im on clonazepam and it helps reduce stress and anxiety that can increase tics. i get very easily angry and frusterated too. thats sometimes hard to deal with. im wondering it thats a symptom of tourettes syndrom too or if thats just the way I am. as for your job, they cant fire you for something you cant control. if there is a chance that you could swear at a customer/client then talk to your boss about it and let them know. they can suggest something to you like maybe working in a different area. my work asked me about it too and said if there were a chance to let them know because they can place me somewhere that i wont be working directly with people. and as for swearing and throwing..you can usually feel a tic coming on. i know i can anyways..so if thats the case then try to supress it for a minute and get away to do what you have to do. best of luck to you.

No they can't fire you, you could sue their pants off if they did! I saw once on the Discovery channel where a guy had Tourettes so bad he couldn't even pick up his kid or even drive, he had this electronic impulse thing put in his head and now he is right as rain again! Maybe you could inquire about this procedure the next time you see a Dr.

There is a man named Brad Cohen who was my boss's student teacher. He has Tourette's and is a primary grade teacher. Can you imagine trying to explain to a group of young kids why you might say bad words or talk out?? He had 20 some interviews before he finally found a job. Google him and read his story, he has been on Oprah and I think he has a book out. Good luck to you!!

i saw a show on discovery health last semester where they put a electric thing with a remote in a girls brain and I don't really know what the thing did, but I guess it did something with the electric potentials that cause the ticks. Anyway she was totally fine after the operation, I thought it was amazing!!! Just thought I would share that with you. Good luck.

the man in the office next to mine has turrets and he has been with the company for ten years. You are protected under the Americans with disability act. Even tho Dave has his ticks he is more normal then some of my other coworkers. Good Luck.

I wish I had that problem. I'd throw a stapler at my bosses head and pretend it was tourettes. haha. Nah, I'm sorry, I wouldn't know a thing about it. I'm just being ignorant.

If they fire you for that you can sue the butt off the place. Try some calming breathing exercises and focus on a picture or a spot on the wall while your breathing.

they can't fire you because of a disability.but they can FIND something else to fire you for.my suggestion is to file for social security disability and ssi.after you get that taken care of,you can still work if you think you can.the work source in your area can help you find a job that you would not have to worry about losing.
