Unless you have a job here, don't move here. You won't survive NYC without a job. Second, I hope you have lots of money. To rent an apartment you'll need crazy money. On average, a one bedroom goes around $1800. So when you sign your lease, they require First, Last, and Security. So that's $5600 up front. Plus the broker takes on average 15% of the yearly salary for his services which would be roughly... $3240. So you need to pay $8840 upfront to get an apartment!

Almost all apartments in New York are rented through a broker. So good luck.

Then don't forget you need to install cable, internet, phone, and all that stuff which is more money! You basically need serious cash flow to even start in NYC!

If you have a good paying job set up, then you will do fine in NYC.
The cost of rent varies depending on what part of the city you want to live. The outter boroughs are less expensive. Currently, I pay $1,400 for a one bedroom in a very nice area of Queens.

Just make sure you already have a job, and make sure you're prepared to lay out some money up front to get started. You'll probably be asked to pay one month's rent and one month's security deposit up front. You may also have to pay a fee for a credit check. This should be no more than about $50. Telephone, etc. should not be much; perhaps a few hundred for everything. Don't forget, if you go through a broker, you will also have to pay a broker's fee, about 15% of the annual rent. That is not unusual. It is best to find a good reputable broker.

If you decide to move, make sure you have "street smarts". If you're moving from a small town, you may want to try living in a smaller city first before you move to NYC.

I don't think that that's a move you should make unless you have lots of money to spend. It's very expensive here and getting pricier as the time passes.
