Lets start with a standard Army Division.

It is comprised of Brigades. Generally 3-4 Brigades make up a Division.

The Brigades are comprised of Battalions. Generally 3-4 Battalions make up a Brigade.

A Battalion is comprised of Companies. Generally 4 Companies make up a Battalion. These would be designated as Headquarters Company, A Company, B Company and C Company. The HQ Co. will be 200 or more men strong. A,B,C Co's. will generally be between 130 - 150 men each.

In an Armored Calvary Division it breaks down like this.

The Brigades described above are called Regiments. Like the 3rd ACR (Armored Cav. Regiment), 11th ACR, 7th ACR etc.

The Battalions above are call Squadrons. These will be the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Squadrons.

The Companies described above are Called Troops.

As described above with the Co's in each Battalion being HQ, A,B and C. The Troops are designated as starting with A, B and C Troops in the 1st Squadron. Then D,E and F Troops in the 2nd Squadron and finally G,H and I Troops in the 3rd Squadron. Each Squadron has a HQ. Troop.

The numbers of men assigned to the Troops is roughly the same as the equivalent company in a Battalion.

well it has different meanings!

A Troop or troops is referring to everyone you are referring to. It could be a squad all the way up to include everyone in the service!

Though no longer used very often in the military it could mean different things as well, though it usually refers to a company. I believe it was used mainly in the army for horse soldiers in a Calvary. While in Korea I was on the same yama with the 7th Cav, !st Calvary Division. Gary Owen, as the 7th Cav is referred to, is Custer's last outfit.

A troop ship I guess refers to all the troops on board. I don't know whether we still have them!

So there is no one answer. It depends on how you or the military use it!

You talking about a Cav troop? or THE troops? It's an outdated term for the most part that can mean lots of things.
