1. Bible contradictions
2. The way God is portrayed in the Bible as committing acts of evil and cruelty
3. The lack of proof - and with it, the strange coincidence that Christianity is oddly similar to Pagan religions that existed before or during the same time as the developments in the Bible that mirror them - right down to Jesus Christ himself vs. Mithras.
4. Hell. I give God a WHOLE lot more credit than that. If we are loving, He's likely to be infinitely more so. Eternal punishment for anything that a human can do in 70 to 100 measly years on earth - it's not logical nor in the least bit loving.
5. Many religions, many different gods and goddesses. Who is God? He, she, one, many, three, personal, impersonal... there's no way to know. I think there is a God, but I know that it's not something I can know for sure. If there is, then He (or She) is likely shaking His head at our dumb ways of representing Him (or Her, or Them - whatever).
6. There were some people, one in particular from this site, that explained some things to me and got me to thinking carefully about what I believed. What I believed - and in fact, what many Christians believe - is not in the least bit Biblical. And, if it's not Biblical, it can't be Christianity. Sorry - but the Biblical God is NOT some Big benevolent grandfather type. He condones murder of babies and taking virgins hostage to be slaves or wives by force. That's no God of mine.
7. Every little thing I ever experienced in 20 years of being a Christian - from answered prayer to "feeling the Holy Spirit" to what have you - all of it can be explained away quite easily using a bit of logic.

If someone had told you 20 yrs ago that Yugos were the car of the future and you got stuck with one, would that be proof to you that all cars are junk? Of course not. It would not be logical. It only proves that yugos were bad. There are many other cars that are much better.
So just because some of you hated Catholicism or whatever other churches, that does not mean Christianity is false. It just means that some peoples interpretation is wrong. There are many other Christians who would probably agree with many of your opinions about various denominations.
Just an open invitation to try some others if you ever feel so inclined.

I learned quite a bit more about how the world really works, and realized that the religious folks didn't really know much of anything at all about it. Then on top of that, the real god I was expecting never appeared, and it became more and more obvious that was just a fairy tale.
I'm not sure I'd call free thinking a "brilliant light", but it certainly does make religious belief seem like living in a little hole.

I haven't read the scripture that you're citing, but I will correct one comment directed at Carol M. in your question.
Jesus forgives. He forgives and forgives and forgives and forgives....
The only catch is that you have to ask for it. A person can leave the Faith for whatever reason, but they can always come back because there is no sin, big or small, that Jesus can't forgive. Adolf Hilter could have experienced a change of heart and asked God to forgive him for the unimaginable evil he committed, and if he was sincere and repentent, God could have forgiven him. As big as the sin of the holocaust was, to God, it is a drop in the bucket. Why do I bring this up? To illustrate the infinite power of God. There is nothing too big, too evil that He can't forgive.
So if someone leaves the Faith, they are not locked out for good. We always have a way back. We just have to ask.
God bless,
Danny

The hypocritcal atmosphere...too many opinions, no correct answers. Plenty of people thinking that all they had to do was go to church one day a week and it made all the terrible mean things they did the rest of the week null and void.
I prefer to be kind, do unto others and beleive that any decisions, choices or events that are part of my life are my own doing. Therefore I can fix it myself, no need to pray to a deity or just give up and leave it into 'gods hands'. A person makes better choices for themselves if they know they are going to have to clean up the mess later on.

politics in the church
i am agnostic now
i was involved in the youth group. the youth director was wounderful. he helped me and many others grow in faith, but there where a couple of parents that did not like his stile they got the church to dictate what music could be played what activities could be done. they formed a board to tell him how to do his job. sad to say i was on it as a youth 17 at the time i had no voteing right and very little voice. we went on a mission trip with 2, 15 passange vans full. one of the Adult Role Modals (ARMs) did not suport a single decsion the youth leader made and even went as far as to constantly undermine his athoraty. not long after the trip ended the youth leader left . i decide if there is no room for a man like him then there is no room for me here either
the youth group of this church went from 20 or more down to 3
we all have our faults i have mine he has his but his gift was he could pull youth into the church

For those wanting to find their way back to Jesus and away from liars like you.
John 3:16_18
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

I came to the realization that I WANTED to believe much more than I actually believed. In my teens I was afraid of the alternative to no god ("nothingness" after death)...but eventually I accepted that idea enough to be honest with myself.
Once I accepted the idea of no god I allowed myself to really ponder the questions i avoided before...
like why would god create hell in the first place?
if god is really omniscent and omnipotent then the idea of sinning and hell is a really really sadistic concept.
Now I am blissfully non-christian; although I have no problem with people believing....lots of people believe all kinds of crazy things in this world....more power to you.

what's so brilliant about turning your back on your creator? I think if you repent, God can take you back. Didn't Peter deny Him three times?
Before Christ returns, there is something called the Apostacy or falling away of some Christians from their faith.
