Warm, salt water swishes for a few days works very well. Not too much is needed - small cupful, or whatever he can stand.

Also, cut out acidic foods for at least about a week, such as tomato sauce, pizza, OJ, iced tea (also high in tannic acid and tough on stomachs), oranges,etc..

And L-lysine can help alot. It's an ammino acid, like a vitamin, sold over the counter. My EENT doctor recommeded it. But am not sure if safe for kids or what dose - ask pharmacist.

Try putting powdered alum (a very small amount) on the sore for 1 minute. It should dry out the poison. Have water ready for him to rinse his mouth out...it tastes NASTY!!!

Also, have him use mouthwash after brushing at least once a day. It will kill some of the bacteria in his mouth that could be causing the infection.

BTW, sometimes canker sores are caused by food allergies. It's like having hives in the mouth. You might want to monitor his diet around the time of the canker sore's appearance, and see if he ate anything unusual (or usual, sometimes the most innocent things cause bad reactions).
