Get something called Orabase. It's like Orajel, but it creates a paste over the sore that alleviates the pain. Something else he could try is to brush his teeth and swish with some mouthwash. That helps to kill any bacteria that can irritate a canker sore. I get canker sores all the time and this is what I've found to be helpful.

My sister (who is also rebekah r!) swears by a mixture that you gargle of half benedryl and half milk of magnesia. i am a big fan of crushed aspirin applied right to the site, but this may not be appropriate depending on how old your son is. I find too that anything that cleans the area (brushing my teeth, using listerine, or hydrogen peroxide) stings for a moment but then always leaves me feeling better

Use Oral gel or Kank aid for the pain. To get them to go away, my mother-in-law boils corn cob and then makes me drink the juice. I let it cool and drink a full glass. It doesn't taste bad and don't get the sores for weeks
