And there's more egg info here than you could ever scramble!
There are several kinds of chickens all over the world. As a matter of fact, there are more chickens than total of any other particular species of animal on the planet. Eggs can be white, brown, or speckled and all the same. They can be big or small as well. Enjoy the info!

There are many, many breeds of chickens. People tend to prefer to buy white eggs, even though they come from the same kind of chicken.
What you should really look for in eggs are eggs that don't come from hens who live in battery cages. Hens in battery cages are crammed 5-9 in a small cage, stacked 3 high. The hens on the bottom row are brown with poop from the ones above. Their beaks are cut off so they don't peck each other. They never see the sun. They only "produce" for 18 months, and then they are killed for chicken soup or pet food.

Like many of the others have said, it depends on the breed. The general rule though (and is more accurate than 'red birds = brown eggs') is that red eared hens lay brown eggs and pink or white eared hens lay white eggs. There's several other breeds that lay different colored eggs. One, called the Americana (sp?) lays red, blue, green, pink and white eggs. Their nick name is the 'Easter egg chicken'. Others will produce blue eggs, others pink, some green and some spotted. The reason why we see so many white eggs in the market is because the best egg laying breeds lay white and brown eggs :-) .

It has to do with the breed of the chicken.
Many lay brown eggs and they are shades of brown. I have Barred Rocks and they lay brown eggs. My birds lay a medium dark color and a few lay very light pale tan eggs.
Araucanas are a type of Bantam chicken and they call them the easter egg chicken as they lay pale green and blue even pink eggs.

there are several varieties of chickens. usually a white chicken will lay white eggs, and a brown chicken will lay brown eggs. some will even lay speckled ones. it all depends on the type of chicken that lays it--they all taste the same though, regardless what people say.

different chickens lay different colored eggs. I've seen green eggs. I don't know what kind of chicken they were from but it was a chicken egg. Also brown eggs make better cakes, I thinks it's because they are richer or something.
