Because all the a**holes around here think they're sooooooooo important with their SUVs, cell phones, and Starbucks, they simply can't imagine being out-of-touch for even a second. It doesn't matter that they have kids in the car, other drivers on the road, or pedestrians around, THEY have people to communicate with at all cost!

Excellent question.

californians are a special breed. we are more free than anyone else in the USA. theres such a versatile mix of people and cultures here and everyone has a different opinion as to how things should be ran. and since most can't chew gum and walk at the same time, well, i guess they figure we can't drive and talk either. i personally got rid of my cell phone 5 years back and will never own another. i like my privacy for one, and i have to pay attention to all the jerks that AREN'T paying attention to any one else while their driving. why doesn't my insurance rates decline?californians are the most important people in the world. god forbid somebody passes another law here as if we didn't have all we needed anyway. F.Y. I.: looks like their gonna pass a law (if they haven't already) that you can't smoke OUTSIDE in some cities in L.A. i know smoking is banned already at all beaches and boardwalks..to sum it up, we're just nuts!!!

Probably for the same reason some people zip around at 100 mph for fun....

People think short term, and perfer what's fun, enjoyable, amusing, exciting, etc over what is wise and safe.

They make the same mistake when not driving cars also, btw.
