and I thought I died for nothing.

This is a question that is presented to most Philosophy students in University/college's around the world.

Let me try and repharse your question and thus answer it:

If you DO believe in God and there is no God, you are just going to die and rot away replenishing the soil and etc. or sit around in an ashtray somewhere.

If there is a God and you DO believe, you're soul is going to Heaven to be happy and at peace, but your body still does the above mentioned.

If you DO NOT believe in God and there is no God, then you are still going to decompose or sit on a mantle somewhere in an Urn.

If you DO NOT believe in God and there IS a God, you are screwed and will in the end be punished!

So, it can be logically argued it is better to believe in God and hope for the best outcome. Even if there isn't a God, Hope is not a terrible thing to live with.

I took some liberties with the actual way the Philosopher's put it, but you get the point I hope.

Hope that helps

I would like to first point out that "God" has no been properly defined in this question. Which god? Man has invented thousands of them throughout history. Specifically, which one are you referring to?

This is, of course a very illogical line of "reasoning," because it works any way that you look at it: if you are referring to the Christian god, then what if it's really the Muslim god? The only way to follow this "logic" is to practice every known religious belief.

Oh, and you'll have lost the only life that you have.

The problem with this line of reasoning is that there are thousands of gods that humans have imagined. A person who believes in Allah can make this statement, and so can a person who believes in God, and so can a person who believes in Vishnu. This multitude of fictional beings shows the silliness of the argument. There is no way to know which god to choose, because there is no evidence whatsoever indicating that any of them exist.

I've thought of that a lot too. But, I guess people don't want to be duped, if they really don't believe there is a God then worshiping him would be like being cheated by a scam artist in their minds.

I personally believe, but I do think we need to support everyone right to believe whatever they want, or not believe if that's what they want to do.

If God is real and the world and humanity are in the condition they're in, then God is a freaking monster and unworthy of worship by any stretch of the imagination. So what will I have lost? Not a G*O*D D*A*M*N THING!

Or as Homer Simpson astutely observed, "What if we believe in the WRONG god, and every week when we go to church the real one just gets angrier and angrier?".

So you're saying I should falsely believe in "God", who supposedly know all my thoughts and everything I do, so therefore, correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't I still lose?
