They say panic attacks are caused by a chemical imbalance.
There are a few thinks you can do. I no !
Crossword puzzles are taking a shower a friend of mine gets them in the evening she takes a hot shower and it seems to work. Just sit and talk to someone don't try to handle it alone
that seems to make the panic worse. Don't let what people that have never had one say bother you. They are awfull ! It is a true medical condition. Xanax does help don't feel like a druggie for taking them. Even playing cards with the kids can help are maybe getting away from the kids for awhile would help more. Good Luck you just have to experiment & see what helps you the most.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I know how you're feeling...trust me. I started having panic and anxiety attacks in 1998. It also spilled over into other areas of my mental health. It's hard for other people to understand what it feels like both physically and mentally. Have you started seeing a doctor? That should be step one. And don't go to your family doc about it. A psych. is much better. They deal with this stuff everyday and have a better idea on how the meds work. There are so many of them....you really need someone that deals strictly with mental problems. Please don't feel bad for taking medication. It does not mean your crazy and it's nothing to be ashamed of. It's just like taking an Advil for a headache...you know? It may take them awhile to get the right combo for you but don't give up! They will get it right and you will start feeling better! You should also start seeing a therapist. It helps to have someone else to talk to. They can also help you learn breathing techniques. I know that may sound silly but they help...honest. What happens with panic and anxiety is that something triggers it to make it happen in the first place...you may not even know what it is. It could be one thing or just the build up of a lot of things that blows up. You have an attack and you're scared. The next thing you know you start living in fear of the next attack. You may start avoiding places where they happen because you associate them as triggers. Try not to get stuck in this trap! The fear builds on fear creating new fear....it's a horrible cycle. There are a lot of really good self help workbooks out there that will assist you in learning how to manage all of this. I used one myself. The most important thing is...you have to want to do it...you have to want to help yourself, take it on and not give in! If you don't have that will then nothing will get better...only worse. You will also find some wonderful support groups online where you can tak with others who share the same medical problem. It's a great source of support and information. Your life doesn't have to stop because of this...be strong...believe in yourself. If you ever need a friend to talk with who understands I am here for you. Feel free to message or email me anytime. Take care of yourself and in the meantime try not to think about it so much...I know that's hard...but the more you think about it the more upset you'll make yourself. Know I am sending you many hugs and well wishes!

I have had these things now for 4 yrs and u know the best thing i have found is to not run from the situation, face it and watch your panic rise and start falling. What alot of ppl dont understand is that they have a cycle. They start they get worse then they start to drop. Every few secs, tell yourself hey I'm closer to this thing ending. That worked for me. After u see how a panic attack runs its course then u will be able to handle them like their nothing. Remember that your in control of your body, not the panic. *smile* hope this helps.

Figure out what is making you go into your panic attacks. Is it being around a crowd or talking to lots of people?

Talk to your doctor and have he/she address the problem. Remember, if you feel like a panic attack coming on, get out of the situation and take big deep breaths.

Whoa you put this question on 3 times. Is that for emphasis. Try to go about your life as normal as possible. Did you go through a traumatic experience that caused the panic attacks to start? You should really let your Dr know.

The first thing you need to do if you are experiencing an attack is to focus on your breathing. Slowly breathe in and out counting your breaths and focus on making your breathing smooth woth mo jerkiness in your breathing cycles. Smooth transitions from inhale to exhale. Remove yourself to a location where you can concentrate on this until you have calmed down.

Try to monitor your thinking patterns. It is always something that you are thinking about that triggers the onset of an attack. ALWAYS. Whatever negative emotional thoughts you are having you need to realize that things are OK. You need to remind yourself of the things that are good and stop thinking about negative things that don't exist yet or that you have no control over. It will take some time to retrain your brain to think normally about normal stuff. Eliminate the negative emotional thoughts. The next thing that helps is to exercise. It doesn't have to be strenuous. Just get outside and walk and think about the things you see outdoors. I wish you the best. I have had to deal with anxiety and attacks for years. I occasionally have to remind myself to do the things that I just told you to do. It works. You can do it.

I found a wonderful book that literally saved my life from depression. It also deals with panic disorder. It basically tells you how to confront your fears and restructure your thinking so that you no longer have panic attacks. It's a technique called cognitive behavior therapy. The author makes it relatively easy as he walks you through the steps. Read here how it got me through depression:
