If by "file" you mean the setup files, or cabs to setup windows 98 those can be deleted. (I would recommend burning them off to CD, just in case you need them later)

However, if you mean the previous setup location for windows 98 then no. If you upgraded windows 98 to XP and you set it to use the previous directory that contained windows, then it is possible that you would be deleting your current windows installation.

IF you know how to use a DOS command line, and can rename files without an OS try the following:

If you still have fat32, and did not migrate to NTFS, AND you have a current usable boot disk, then you might try renaming the folders. Add the word old to the end, or something you will remember.

Try rebooting after changing the name. If you have problems, then use the boot disk to go back and change the folders back to the original name. If you don't have problems, archive them, or delete them (*I still recommend burning these off)

well xp does take up alotta space already + wit the files u have on hd...
either ur hd is small or best is just format the whole thing
save wutever is neccessary and copy it when u finish xp install
other then that get a bigger hd and u dont have to worry about files eat'n up ur space.
i upgrade from 80gig
well after a long run u gonna need a bigger hd if u wanna keep all the files but good luck bside when u upgrade to xp it should take out the win 98

Hopefully, you loaded your new OS (XP) on a different partition/volume as your Win98. If you did, and you have a dual-boot configuration, you should be able to delete Win98.

Your better option, though, to preserve your computer's data, would be to uninstall the WinXP from where you installed it, then just upgrade the whole system. If you don't want to keep a dual-boot system, then there is no reason to not upgrade the Win98 in the first place.

so instead of doing the upgrade, you went out and bought a copy of Windows XP??? When you set up Windows XP it should have formatted your hard drive.. Windows XP takes up a lot more space then windows 98 does...

Sure. Just restart the upgrade process, and select upgrade. It will do everything over, removing 98 and harming nothing.

yeah.. they hold settings and importantly non-esential files for XP to operate with an 98 upgrade.

Um... I mean do not delete them.
