Actually, Dominique, it can be one of three things:
1. a person with exceptional powers or talents (like a child prodigy, a math prodigy) OR
2. An act or event so extraordinary or rare as to cause wonder (awe; it was a prodigious event/occasion) OR
3. A portentous sign or event; an omen

Prodigy is not synonymous with child prodigy.

I was a child prodigy. When I was just a baby, my mother tells me that I played beautifully on the linoleum, but it's been so many years that I've forgotten how and I'm not even sure I'd recognize a linoleum if I found one in an antique shop.

A child with an exceptional talent or gift. My oldest was reading at 4 years old. and by 12 he was designing software programs. That's a prodigy. Then, he hit puberty and well, he's still smart, but he found girls and lost his mind. (I am speaking metaphorically of course.)

A master of certain skills/abilities at a young age. For example, playing piano concertos when you're 4. Writing symphonies at 6, etc. Mozart was one. The Prodigy is also a kick a$$ British band famous for songs such as "Smack my B*tch Up", "Firestarter", and "Breathe".

someone who has great ability at a very young age. One of my friends composed a symphony for a full orchestra at the age of fourteen. He swears he's not a prodigy, just gets a lot of practice time cuz he's homeschooled. I disagree.

Usually it's a child genius. They usually know everything, spelling, math, reading. These are freaks that read adult classics and can discuss them at the tender age of 5. They also usually play musical instruments and have a high taste for the arts. They play with their chemical sets for fun, and usually win national spelling bees.
