Hit down on the ball. Getting someone to understand that hitting down on a golfball actually makes it go up is very difficult. Backspin gives the ball lift, which in turn makes it fly farther. A perfect divot (a chunk of grass dug up by the club) begins just underneath where the ball sits and extends about six inches in front of where the ball was lying. But you have to hit the ball slightly before making contact with the ground.

Hit the ball first, and make sure you hit DOWN onto the back of the ball. Don't try to scoop it off the ground. Don't believe it? Think of the game tiddlywinks -- you push down onto the back of the tiddlywink with another one to make it pop up into the air. Same thing happens when the club hits down onto the back of the golf ball -- it pops the ball into the air. The grooves on the club face impart the spin. The greater the loft of the club (sand wedge, pitching wedge, etc.), the more spin that's generated.

Hit lower on the ball

We are talking about irons, mainly.
The club must contact the ball on the downward (slightly!) part of the swing.
Also, if you are a right-hander, play the ball closer to your right foot than you normally would for a distance shot; you want loft, right, not distance. Southpaws obviate.
(Don't forget to replace that divot.)
