I had a dog for 5 years and she was fine. When we got another dog, my 5 year old dog started acting like a completely new dog. She played w/ her and everything and loved being around her. She acts like a puppy again.

i just got my first puppy, and she looks very alone and sad all the time since she no longer has her brothers and sisters with her...even though i'm home all day, and so is my 2 year old son, she still feels left out, being the only canine.
i think dogs are more social than other animals, such as cats, who prefer being solitary. my friend has 3 dogs of various ages, and they are very close. i have never seen them fighting. the youngest(6 months and 1 year) are incredibly close together and love playing with each other.
i would assume your dog is probably a lot happier having a fellow canine in the house, even if you do spend less time with it, at least it can relate to someone. i'm sure as long as you let them both know you will always be there for them, they will be alright.
:-)

Are you kidding.. Oh they LOVE having a partner around - and it's good socialization skills. I wish we could get another, but we just don't have the time to train and potty train the dog. Since we both work it's really hard.
HOWEVER, if you have a dog that's been around for five years and never gets to see other dogs.. then.. you might be careful making such a decision. The dog may not get along with the other dog. They do build personalities and behaviors. That'd be the only thing I'd be thinking about.

Believe or not it really depends on the Dog's breed and temperment. Dogs in general don't need other dogs as long as they are part of a pack...you as the owner are considered part of that pack and part of its accepted territory. Some breeds are more inclined to need company than others and should have a companion if you can't be there most of the time. That companion can be any living creature, though I recommend a creature that can handle your dog's personality. Putting a chipmunk with a Rottweiller will not last long.
So it depends on your breed. Look it up on the net and see if it needs to be part of a larger group or not. See the link below to begin your search.
Hope this helps.

As long as a dog has some company, it doesn't usually matter whether it's a human or another dog or a cat or a herd of sheep. Some dogs hate other dogs or just prefer to be the only one getting the attention.

Depends on age and raising. If the dog is older and has always been the only dog then no. Bringing a new dog would make that dog feel threatened. If its a new dog or an older dog that has been raised around others then go for it. It would be highly recommended. Dogs can have social personalities and needs
as we do.

My situation is like "RF90", I definately think it's wonderful for your dog to have a playmate around that is another dog! It will help prevent the dog from being lonely while you're at work.

Depends on the dog--not the breed so much as the personality. I have one that enjoys playing with other dogs but all in all she'd much rather be the only pet.
My neighbor's dog, on the other hand, is constantly jumping their fence, running across the street, jumping my fence and she plays with my dog all day. When they finally got another dog, she finally stopped jumping the fence.
So it really depends on personality of the dog.

Dogs are pack animals. They love having other dogs around. I can't handle two dogs so mine bonded with the cats and they have a social order and everything. It's fun to watch him follow the cats (He's at the bottom of the pack)
