You can show up with no reservation and if there is a seat available, you can purchase it but you cannot reserve a seat without paying. The airline wants your money before they will save a seat for you. You can't even put a deposit down; you can't have them "hold" a seat for you without giving them the full purchase price. You'll pay a much higher price for travel purchased on the day of travel and you will probably be "flagged" for extra security inspections.

You have to use a credit card either way, but I used to use a credit card to hold the reservation and then pay cash at the airport. I'm not sure they still do that, though.
