Yankee doode went to town riding on a pony stuck a feather in his HAT and CALLED IT MACARONI!!!!!!!!!!! There is your answer but I have a twist on this song if you want to hear it.
Yankee doodle went to town riding on a spider, stuck an apple up his but, it came out apple cider. HAHAHAHAHA that one is funnier.

Depends on how you read it. At first glance, one would assume that the feather is being called macaroni. The way the song is worded, the "it" could actually be talking about his cap OR the feather being called macaroni. Most people choose the feather as being referred to by the word "it" in the song. Either would be correct.

Why don't you just look up the history of the word macaroni...? You'll find that it was a style of fashionable dress that involved long feathery plumes in elaborate hats. That a country rube should think that he was in the macaroni mode just by sticking a feather in his cap sets him apart as a true Yankee (colonial) "doodle" (fool).

well if i were him i would have named "myself" macaroni because can you imagine how many time he got beat up at school for having a name like yankey doodle.....can you imagine the nicknames.....pore kid.
