I think kids are getting a far better education than then. The question should be: Are kids acquiring as much knowlege? Then I would question that. With the number of kids who flat out will not cooperate in school, parents who don't expect their kids to succeed or insist they behave or do their work it makes it impossible for teachers to appear successful. There is so much more information available to kids today. Research continually improves the ways we learn and teach.

Yes.

I think the quality of education is a function of how kids use what they are taught to be self-suffcient and thrive in the world they live in.

I also think education is reflective of the time, culture, politics and the economy. We value those skills that will help us do well in the world we live in. The stuff that was important 20 or 30 years ago may not have the same importance.

100 years ago, kids may have learned a little about reading and writing, but they were taught a trade--like farming, homesteading whatever.

Now education must have a worldly and technologically based focus. Since our world changes and evolves all the time, it is difficult to measure how well education is equiping our kids to survive and make good decisions.

Sometimes I am disappointed that my kids are not learning the same types of things I learned and valued as a kid. However, I have to realize that their education should change to reflect the changes of the world. I am sure my great great grandma would be shocked or disappointed (if she was still alive)that I did not jump at the chance to learn the skills that helped her during the time she lived. However I am better suited and better educated for the world I live today.

I think our traditional school system is very outdated. I think that is why we have such a high drop-out rate in this country.

So this is a tricky question. Just because kids are not learning the things that kids 20 or 30 years ago were learning, does not mean that they are not as well educated.

I actually have more education than my 15 year old--but I still cannot figure out which of the 3 remote controls operate the DVD player.

Kids today are getting more knowledge quicker, broader and from more variety of sources compared to 20-30 years ago.Nevertheless, this does not necessarily translate to a good education or a better education because more knowledge does not equate better education. Education embodies the formation of character and a maturity of thought which comes from both the inculcation of moral values together with good all rounded knowledge which eventually prepares one to live a meaningfully purposeful life of service to humanity and a preservation of nature. It is my opinion that today the emphasis is more prevalent towards gaining more knowledge than the formation of good character and moral values in an individual in today's education worldwide. Hence, kids today are not getting a better education as those 20-30 years ago.

No, I live in Texas and the pressure being put on the teachers and the students to pass that TAKS test is having a negative out come. My child is a middle school and I take alot of her friends home. When the test time comes around they are so tired of tests that they just bubble in on the paper. THEY DON'T CARE. I really don't blame them. Have you seen some of the kids that are in high school write, spell, and set up the math problems. You can't read what they have written down. Don't get me started on the way they talk or have written in note's. All I hear is get the parents involved, believe me I am and the way I was taught how to work math problems is much easier than the way they are taught today.

Good education? You can say that we, kids, are getting too good education that we end up wondering why are we learning so many things for. It's not as though the world demands us to solve trigonometrical sums or to apply to law of physics in every day life of a normal person. Some of the things we learn now is really redundant if you ask me. They only add to the stress that we are all tormented by.

Well, it's been almost 30 years since I graduated from high school. So I couldn't say for sure since I don't have any children of my own. But if the spelling and the questions asked here on Y/A are any indication of the results of our efforts at educating the young, then I would have to conclude that we are not doing a very good job of it. :o(

no. i went to high school 10 years ago and things are WAY different now from when i went to school. everyone is so desperate to even keep the kids in school now that all they have to do is show up, let alone do any work. and some of these courses are crap. i'm sorry, but a teenager does not need a "work internship". your parents should be teaching you how to work all along.

i think the correct word is that education nowadays is "different." education is changing a lot. kids react to things differently...computers are a large factor in successful education programs.

Definitely. Students have more opportunities to showcase their talents and the 'teach less, learn more' concept has been introduced in Singapore -teachers become facilitators to guide students along as they dig out information by themselves.

I don't really know for sure...but i can say that students then were hit if not paying attention...however, after grade school many left school to get a job to support their family. Now...they stay there and don't pay attention...i think it is relatively the same
