Physiologically there are seven major nerve centers in our body. Five are at various points along the spine and two are in the brain.
These plexuses are responsible for involuntary actions in the body like heartbeat, etc. A person in a comatose state is still alive because the nerve plexuses in the spine keep his vital processes going.
The Book of Revelation refers to these seven plexuses metaphorically as seven candlesticks, seven stars, seven churches, seven seals, etc.
The ability to voluntarily control these nerve centers sharpens ones senses and provides varying levels of consciousness. John's experiences in his altered state of awareness is what the Book of Revelation is all about.

The number 7 was believed in ancient times to signify infinity, something unending. Revelation was written to a specific community suffering persecution, and was mean to encourage those people that ultimately God would overcome the evil Roman empire.

The number seven has deep spiritual significance. It has been held sacred by the Hebrews and other Semite peoples since the dawn of time. It represents perfection and holiness. It is used throughout the Scriptures and in this sense is the Almighty's Number.
