Our son was a mo. short of his third birthday when a 40lb. box fell on his head from 12 foot high. He had never complained of headaches or cramps before. After this hit on the head he complained for 7 days of headaches. Doctor sent him for a CT amd then a MRI which showed chiari type one. The head aches fades somewhat but now seem to be coming more often along with leg cramps and stomach aches.

We have been to two neurosurgeons and two neurologists all say the box was the trigger, but not much is known about chiari so treatment is now to wait and see if it stays the same or worsens.

Ok- first of all- be clear about the chiari malformation- it wanst the result of that box accident- it was just discovered when they did the CT. He was born with Chiari malformation. Almost 1% of kids have it.

Is he having headaches and leg cramps and stomach aches because of the Chiari malformation? Its unlikely. Chiari malformations are more likely to cause dizziness, trouble with coordination, weakness, trouble swallowing.

If he is having THREE painful conditions, then you should at least ask yourself if he is doing it for attention. Attention feels good, kids like it. If the symptoms are not disabling, try to pay them a little less attention and see if the complaints fade away.

This is not to say he doesnt have headaches- I would it i was whacked like that. But, its common in kids to see them develop a pattern of painful complaints after an injury.

Go to a specialist for head injuries that has experience with children. That is pretty serious what you described. He could have a severe problem with his spine too (compression) that should be looked into. I don't know what chiari type one is, sorry. But headaches and cramps after an accident like that need to be looked into and by someone who can give you some answers.

Please don't ask these questions on Yahoo...for heavens sakes. You need to take him back to the doctor immediately!! If you don't have trust with the doctors that he has, go to another well known teaching hospital which usually have specialized departments. Look for a Children's Hospital but take him SOON.....and don't listen to what these Yahoo people tell you...except me!
