I have a 1993 Toyota Previa. Everytime I start the car, there is a humming noise. It comes on with or without the a/c on. What is the sound? Pls HELP?!?!

The sound is coming from somewhere near the fan, alternator or the steering pump. The Previa is very complex.

Any more opinions?

The sound starts once the car is started and never goes away until the car is turned off. Also, the sound is coming from the front, I am assuming it's the fan that's making the noise.

I have narrowed the problem down to 3 possibilities, it's either the fan or the ps pump that's making the noise.

If it has a old style fan with a clutch, when it is in high idle at start they can make a loud hum nothing to worry about. A hum can also come from a Harmonic Balancer if it losing balance.

To answer these questions over the computer, you have to ask yourself, could you answer a question like your own with such limited info?? It's hard enough to diagnose cars when you are standing in front of them and it's 10 times as hard over the computer!! More info. is needed. Does the noise eventually go away? Does it happen only on cold starts after vehicle has been sitting 4 hours or more, or does it happen everytime vehicle is started? How long has this noise been happening? Does the noise appear to be coming from the front, rear, or inside of the vehicle? Previas' have a mechanical cooling fan (front of vehicle) which will sometimes "roar" when engine is first started. Noise will go away after a few minutes. Previas' also have a "whistling" noise from muffler (rear of vehicle) when accelerating. Previas' also have an accessory drive shaft which runs from the front of the engine to the front of the vehicle (engine/transmission mounted under floor of passenger compartment). This drive shaft is used for the cooling fan, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. When the accessory shaft bushings go "bad" , they make all kinds of different noises. I'll try to help as much as possible, but I really need as much info. as you can possibly give me. Thanks.

Sounds like it's the radiator fan. Usually it would only come on if the car is on, just sitting there, and getting hot. If the car were moving it wouldn't need the fan because the air coming in through the grill helps cool the engine.
If your fan is coming on even when the engine isn't hot though (and you're right, it does sound like an AC condensor), then there is a problem with the fan. There are purely mechanical fans, mechanical/eletrical, and straight up electrical- so the problem could be either mechanical or electrical, depending on the type in your car.
Take it to a mechanic you trust to fully diagnose the problem.
Good luck.
Hope this helps.

To throw something else out there, do you have anti-lock brakes? My truck had an issue with the anti-lock brake system, kinda like it was always on, that made it hum/whir all the time. They ended up just disengaging the whole system.

Sounds like the engine to me.

You have to be more specific, where the sound is coming from and such...
