Why is it important to stop smoking if you want to lose some weight? I understand that smoking is unhealthy for your lungs and throat and stuff, but how does it affect weight loss? Any time I try to stop I start gaining weight rather than losing it, even though I don't eat any more than I usually do.

Im not saying that I smoke because I want to lose weight. On other posts on here I see where someone is wanting to lose weight, the answerer-erer (lol) adds that not smoking helps to lose weight, when in my experience its the exact opposite.

No, I dont have a weight problem. My butt is bigger than I like. I eat healthy (most of the time) and I do exercise. But losing 5 or 10 pounds certainly couldnt hurt anything.

I understand what you're saying. I used to smoke like a little walking chimney! I liked it too! I tried to quite a thousand times, because I kept hearing about how bad it was, but to quit you really have to want to, and I guess I finally wanted to. When I quit I started walking and now I'm a fitness director/aerobic instructor/personal trainer.
Getting fit is about being healthy. One can't work out to be fit and smoke. Being on a diet is not being fit, it's working toward being healthy, but you are defeating your purpose by losing weight but choking out your lungs, and poisoning your heart. It just doesn't make sense. You may be losing weight, but you'll die of cancer of the lungs, or heart disease because of the smoke.
The reason you eat more after quitting is because you can finally taste your food! This is why I started walking when I quit, as not to gain alot of weight, plus you have more energy by not smoking. If you do quit, it's a good idea to start a good exercise program.

First of all, ignore Jane87. She's obviously a prick.

As far as smoking and weight loss, I've often wondered why smoking causes a weight loss (notice I didn't say that quitting smoking causes a weight gain). There must be something detrimental about smoking that causes the weight loss, but I am sure that it is an UNHEALTHY weight loss. Ever notice that people dying with terrible diseases such as cancer always have a weight loss before death? Weight loss isn't always good for you.

You really have two problems, smoking and weight control. Address them one at a time. Quit smoking FIRST! Your life may eventually depend on it. Any weight gain will likely be moderate and level off after a short period of time. Once you've conquered the smoking (by far the greater obstacle), you can tackle the weight problem.

Do you get plenty of exercise? Do you eat a healthy balanced diet? Is there a genetic weight problem in your family? Try to determine what the problem might be with your weight. Most importantly, remember that smoking is NOT the answer to your weight problem. By the way, are you sure you have a weight problem? Your picture doesn't show it.

I think you look hot too she's probably jealous. But 1 good reason is if you are smoking you can do less cardio and moving around. I've been smoking and I've been averaging like 30-40 minutes of cardio 3 times a week. When I wasn't smoking I was actually eating more but doing 45-60 minutes of cardio 4-5 times a week and was much skinnier and just looked better and felt more confident but everyone who smokes knows cigerrettes are like crack. They are very hard to quit.

Apparently you burn 200 extra cals. per day by smoking, but I'm thinking it isn't worth it. You won't gain weight forever..trust me; been there done that. You'll get used to being a non-smoker and soon you'll stop replacing it with food. More than likely it's only an increase that you notice! Ditch the butts, life's way better! ;-D

As a third fourth year Pyschology student, i'm in no way claiming i'm an expert on this subject. However, it is common to gain weight when quitting smoking. Somking causes people to feel "full" which means they will eat less. I can't remember exactly way this happens, but it is very common.

okay, well I understand that you want to be healthy, but I say don't look at the scale for awhile and finish the cutting out smoking. And then after you know that you won't smoke anymore then consintrate on loosing weight, then you will be happy and healthy. good luck

I took the money I saved from not smoking and joined a gym. I haven't really lost any weight, but I haven't gained any either.

I think (I don't remember exact details) the ingredients of the cigarette slow down the rate which you would lose weight.

p.s ignore the guy above, you look hot.

Actually smoking increases your metabolism, therefore weight loss, when you quit, your metabolism goes down, so you have to drink more water which increases metabolism, do I have you confused now?
