First of all, use a crate when you can't have your full attention on the puppy. It should be just big enough for the pup to sit down, lay down, and turn around...no bigger. Otherwise they will go on one side, and sleep on the other. Second of all...puppies can generally go 1 hour for every month old they are. Have a 2 month old puppy...make sure it gets out about every 2 hours. Always take the pup out immediatley following feedings and playtime. Either take the puppy out on a leash...or at least go out with it. When it goes potty, praise it. Make it a good experience. When your puppy goes inside the house....if you see it happening, then make a startling noise, to interupt him. Take him outside and let him go...if/when he does...praise him even though he went inside. If you don't see it happen, just clean it up. It's to late to punish them. A lot of times, punishing way after the fact will just confuse them. They don't put 2 and 2 together. They think they are being punished for going potty, not where they went potty. One more thing, if the puppy goes inside..don't let them see you clean it up. Good luck! Oh the joys of having a puppy!

OK, pull up a chair, get comfy, cause this is going to take awhile.

Puppies respond to lots and lots of happy praise and treats. Also, consistancy is key. The first thing you need to do is hang a bell on a ribbon on the door knob of the door you use to take your puppy outside. The second thing you need to do is go to the store and pick out a special treat to use ONLY WHEN YOU REWARD YOUR PUPPY AFTER IT POTTY"S OUTSIDE!

Each time you take the puppy out, put his/her nose on the bell so that it rings and say "go outiside". You must absolutely go out side with your puppy each time you take it out and make sure that your pockets are filled with the special treats I mentioned before.. Be happy that it's not winter. Walk your puppy around your yard saying go poop or go tinkle. As soon as your puppy pee's carry on like it's the 4th of July fireworks. In a happy voice immediately say goooood pee... what a good puppy ... good pee and give the puppy a special treat. Repeat this when the puppy poops... just be sure to say good poooooop.... etc.

If you do this consistantly, your puppy will learn that good things happen. Soon the puppy will know to go to the door and nudge the bell with it's nose, letting you know it needs OUT! :-)

Some other things that will help:

Take your puppy out immediately when it awakens

Put all food and water up a couple of hours before bed time... this will hopefully help your puppy get through the night.

During the day, take your puppy out ever hour or so... using the method I described above.

If you follow this, you should make great strides in house training your puppy!!!! Positive reinforcement is essential in training a puppy.

Puppy needs to potty about every 2 hours AROUND THE CLOCK...

You must understand that puppies really can NOT control the urges or hold it until they are about 6 months old. Thus the need for them to understand the door means out. ANYtime it goes to the door or near it, take it out. Use the word OUT.. Praise it when it does it`s job.

You must take puppy to the door and say the word OUT. EVERYTIME........ It will soon learn OUT means outside and to go to the door..

DO NOT paper train it. It will think everytime it sees a newspaper it is a potty. Right from the first take the pup out.

AND take it out after every meal.

Be consistant and have patience.. You baby really does want to please you.. Do NOT hit it. Do not holler at it.. NEVER call it to you and hit it. Would you come to someone calling you, who hit you the last time you came to them?

God bless & Hugs from Texas. {:-)

My mother trained our puppy by making him smell it every time he went in the house. Then she would then tap his nose lightly with rolled up newspaper. By the time he was a few months old, he was fully trained! Whenever he had to go, he would come to one of us and let out this little bark. We would then open the door for him. When he was finished he would bark again for us to let him back in. He would "tell" my mother to open the door for him every morning at around 6:30. The "bark" was very distinctive. He had different barks for different situations. If you are consistent, your dog can be like this too. By the way, someone was always home so there were never any accidents.

Remember: dogs are not born knowing they go potty outside, not on your rug.
Crate train and when she is not in her crate watch her every second. Dogs go through a routine before they eliminate, some sniff, some circle... when you see that pick her up and run outside and say hurry up (whatever you want the cue to be). If she goes outside, praise her ton. Not just a "good dog", throw a party, run around in circles, give her a piece of cooked hotdog.
Obviously you must take her outside often, I would say every hour, but dogs must go after they eat sleep and exercise. Take her out, say hurry up, when she goes praise and go inside.
If you take your eyes off of her and she goes and you don't see her doing it, that is your fault, do not punish her because she will not know why she is in trouble. If you catch her in the act, make a loud noise to stop her and rush her outside. Praise her after she goes. Don’t smack her if she pees in the house, she may just try to hold it forever and develop bladder problems, something you really don’t want.
I cannot tell you how helpful a crate has been in housebreaking my puppy. He has never had an accident in his crate and when I get him out of his crate we go directly outside (I carry him) and he pees.
I do not recommend pee pads or paper training. When you use pee pads, you are teaching your dog to go potty in your house. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my dog peeing anywhere in my house, pee pad or no pee pad.

IF YOUR PUPPY IS VERY YOUNG IT NEEDS 3 MEALS A DAY OF GOOD PUPPY FOOD. FEED AT THE SAME TIME EACH DAY AND GET THE DOG ONTO A DAILY SCHEDULE. TAKE THE PUPPY OUT TO THE SAME SPOT AFTER EACH MEAL.
IT IS BEST TO TEACH THE PUPPY TO LIKE IT'S KRATE. FEED IT IN THE KRATE EVEN NEVER KRATE FOR PUNISHMENT. A YOUNG PUPPY HAS TO GO OUT ABOUT 6 TIMES A DAY UNTIL ITS SYSTEM DEVELOPES. IF THE PUPPY DOES NOT GO AFTER YOU HAVE HAD IT OUT FOR A REASONABLE TIME BRING IT IN AND PUT IN CAGE FOR ABOUT 10 UP TO 15 MINUTES AND REPEAT THE ABOVE.
THE BEST KRATE IS THE AIRLINE TYPE AND LARGE ENOUGH FOR THE DOG TO STAND UP. START SMALL AND WORK UP TO THE PROPER SIZE.

CONTINUITY!!!! Do not ever waiver on your habits of taking the puppy outside to do his thing ever! every two hours and even when they start sniffing-WARNING-that means he's looking for a place to pee! Praise-lots of praise when the dog does his thing otherwise he doesn't know if he did what was expected of him. Keep both of these things in check and balance and never waiver from consistency and it will happen just one fine day! It takes some time to do this, do not loose patience!!!!! It will happen but its not easy. Good Luck.

First of all, you NEVER hit a dog, or any animal for that matter. If you do, they will only fear you, and you've ruined a perfectly happy animal. AND, you never rub their nose in it... some people are so stupid. You DO however, like another person said, wait until they DO go to the bathroom (outside, on paper, wherever you want them to do it) then praise them, A LOT... they'll get the message....

Put a gate up. say in the kitchen or bathroom, so the puppy is confined. He will get use to the same routine. As soon as you feed or water, take him outside. Again, stay in one area so he smells his own odor.

My malamute will not poop anywhere but at home, unless he is in the dog park running.
