ANYTHING that is not of FAITH is SIN. Yea, that's what GOD said. Take a long time to explain that, but it can be explained. Hope this helps, but it probably dosen't help much yet. GOD gave us the Basic's starting with the 10 Commandment's. Ditto......

There is so much about sin in the Bible. The Pauline Epistles are a good place to look for it, but the meaning of the words themselves are good for the understanding of it.
" Fallen short " is a good definition, like an archer that shoots his arrow at a target and the arrow falls before reaching the target.
So that condition is implied to human beings and some angelic beings. The important thing is that God has provided that inability to reach the mark. In Christ.

Go to the back of your Bible, and you see a concordance...look a key word sin...
There is a lot of stuff about sin.
If I give you only one, it is Rom 14:23 "....everything that does not come from faith is sin"
I think that it is a sin when your heart is separated from God.
Jas 4:17
1Jn 5:17
Gal 5:19
God bless.

All over the place. From Genesis to Revelation the sins and errors of men are made known to us. Same sins, different stories. ;)
