it is one of the many types of sacrifices one could offer to G-d. If I remember correctly, the entire sacrifice was burnt to a crisp.
p.s. my roommate always considered buying flowers to be modern sacrifices: you take this nice object, deprive it of its life, and offer it to the one you love so that she may see how much you care about her.
p.p.s. in response to "sum": actually, a burnt sacrifice is not the same thing as a sin sacrifice. (btw, did anyone here know that a sin sacrifice only covered *accidental* sins? And that a bull, not a lamb, was offered?)

There are three different ways that I give offerings to my deities. They each relate to the sea, the land, or the sky. When giving an offering to a deity related to water, I offer it to a moving body of water like a stream or river. When giving an offering to a land deity, I bury the item. When giving an offering to a sky deity, I burn it so that the smoke carries it up to the deity.
