Suse Linux

It really depends on what you are planning on doing with it.
Some of the top choices would be:

Redhat linux
Fedora
fedora.redhat.com
Mandrake
www.mandrakelinux.com

Novell Linux Desktop 9
www.novell.com

Mac OS X
www.apple.com

These products require varying degrees of expertise to set up and may have specific hardware requirements, different than windows. Mac is most likely a better alternate as it is the most polished, but has a steep cost in regards to hardware and software. If you are looking for a cheap solution that can run on existing PC hardware then one of the Linux variations would be a better choice.

Just keep this in mind. No operating system is 100% safe and secure. As long as people make them, other people will try and break them. Linux and Mac have the advantage of security through obscurity, as in not enough people use them to make it worthwhile for someone to crack. Hackers are like taggers and like to make a name for themselves. That won't happen by creating a virus for Mac's which make up less than 5% of the desktop market, so the logical target is Windows. As Linux and Mac's have gained market share, so have the number of vulnerabilities affecting those OS's. Not that Linux or Mac's are bad, I have used both myself. Just remember that knowledge is power, and the power to protect yourself and your PC no matter what is running on it. Whatever you run, get good at it and you will be fine.
