Natural red hair is a rare occurence. Most humans have a pigment known as melanin in their skin and hair, which colors it some shade of brown. Red heads have a different pigment, which is lighter, redder, and more likely to form freckles than a tan. Freckles can only rarely form as dark a skin tone as a regular tan, and currently, freckles are generally not considered sexy, so to avoid getting them, a lot of red-heads are spending more time out of the sun, leading to even paler than usual complexions, which can at least be considered good looking in particular fashion circles.
Red hair is common among various Celtic people, such as the Irish, and Scottish, who tend to have a lot of the very pale "norman" ancestors common to scandinavians and such.
There are also a few red heads in africa. These people are actually of the race sometimes referred to as "*******," but they are albinos, and should have no pigment. Instead, for some reason, they have red hair, and a sort of olive colored skin that is not as dark as a white person with a deep tan. You probably haven't met any of these people though, as they tend to get cancer at a very young age. In ages past, their tribes generally considered them a bad omen, and did not support them.

Many of them come from European Ancestors. Ireland and Scotland bloodlines produce redheads with freckles. Sun screen a must!
