John Kifner of the N.Y. Times writes that white supremacist are enlisting in the military and that Aryan Nation graffiti can be found in Baghdad. The article points out that the Pentagon declared a zero-tolerance ten years ago; but, because of recruiting shortfalls created by the Iraq war, the Pentagon has allowed recruiters to have large numbers of Neo-nazis and skinheads to "infiltrate" the military.
Do you agree that because of these shortfalls in recruiting, Neo-nazis and skinheads should be allowed in the military?

Hey Slayor, I'm just asking a question about an article I read. Guess I know what "The Slayor" means, huh!

hhhmmmmm........ has anyone heard of "don't ask don't tell?
hey Mark W, not so. As a matter of fact I'm out here in the desert and i ran into a kid coming out of the shower with a Swastikkka on his lower right side of the chest. He didn't say anything because he seen my rank, but it left me curious as to what the new policies on that were because when i came in six years ago every tatoo i had was docummented. So in turn i assume that it's not like that anymore and desperation is allowing evevryone to slip through the cracks. But yeah i'm sure its a good idea, we should also enlist former Talibans and Czech fighters so they can blow us up after they get a taste for blood out there.

I've seen the story & it's a very bad thing. Membership in such an organization or any racist tatoo is permenantly disqualifying. Things are moving so fast right now in the recuiting world that it's hard to keep up with, but hopefully these people are caught along the way & dismissed. On the other side of the coin, people do a lot of stupid crap when they are immature. The military is sometimes a good place to straighten out their lives & show them minorities that are highly intelligent & professional in a way they've never been exposed to before, and to seperate them from the messed up propoganda that made them believe what they do. It's not being done by the military intentionally to make up for short falls I promise you. The total number of people in such a situation per year would be probably under a hundred, and maybe 2 of them come out of the service still thinking like that. I haven't heard from my recruiter friends lately, but I'll bet there is a policy letter just arrived to watch out for these folks trying to get in. Have a little more faith, be a little more optomistic.

The Pentagon is not ALLOWING recruiters to bring in declared nazis and skinheads, recruiters are taking matters into their own hands due to the pressure they're under to fill quotas and fill out the ranks.

Also, those rapes and murders are ALLEGED, they're under investigation. Whatever happened to "innocent until proved guilty" in this goddamn country?

And one more thing: if you're really under the impression that America is a free country, you're a fool. We may be the free-est of industrialized nations, but that by no means makes us a true democratic, free nation.

No. The military is forbidden from knowingly recruiting gangmembers, racists and extremists. An intensive Tattoo Review is completed on each applicant and an in depth Background Investigation is completed on every Applicant to ensure they do not get in, and to weed out criminals. The Army is also not taking criminals, either.

No, allowing them in is a terrible idea simply because, when they are sent to another country, neo-Nazis and skinheads would be likely to perform actions that could seriously endanger the lives of their fellow soldiers and create a really bad impression of America (which could endanger the lives of Americans in the future).

You are going to have racist people wherever you go, it is just a fact of life. They aren't going out and trying to find Aryans, and it's not like the Aryans are saying oh look there is a zero tolerance policy, guess I can't join.

No I do not think free speech and free religious beliefs trumps over personal civilian safety. So called nazi skinheads might actually enjoy injuring and/or killing non-whites, so the military is not an acceptable outlet for their hate.

And you believe the NYT for what reason?

Maybe you should look at just how meaningless their evidence for making the claim that these people are 'infiltrating' the military is.

Can somebody explain to me why people are so gullible that they automatically believe anything that criticizes the US military?

After reading a lot of the other answers, let me see if I understand this. America is the land of the free. Right to free expression and free beliefs about politics, but you want to ban someone from serving their country because you disagree with their personal belief system?

Halloo! You are as "guilty" as the skin heads, only you fancy yourself their moral superior. Sheesh... not only are you intolerant and narrowminded, but a hypocrite, too.

One of the questions you are asked prior to enlisting is whether you belong to or hold sentiment for any extremist or faddish group.
